Report from the 2023: Lake Sunapee Open and the NextGen Regatta, and we were blessed with fantastic weather two out of the three sailing days. And almost more unusual for this summer – some nice cooperative wind! The Open consisted of five races over two days, with the wind ranging from light to whitecaps. There were a number of wind shifts as usual and as is almost always the case, some sailors found themselves on the right end of those shifts and some on the wrong end. Everyone out on the water enjoyed the stiff competition and blowing winds. Out of twenty boats, John MacCausland/Brad Nichol won the Open (John for the 9th time!), with Andy Ivey/Reid Krakower in second and Steve Braverman/Ron Rezac in third. Peter Follansbee/Nat Cook placed fourth overall and won the first race on Saturday. A huge thank you to the race committee for an outstanding job and the co-chairs of the Open, Lovelynn Ivey, Jenn Nolin, and Chip Nolin!
The NextGen Regatta (for Star skippers 25 years old and under) was also a huge success, with a whopping ten boats. The Friday weather was a bit iffy, but they were able to squeeze in two exciting races before thunderstorms rolled in. Some of the boats had to be towed back to the yacht club due to the impending storms, but everyone made it safely! Kelson Shea/Brad Nichol won the day, with Diego Escobar/Chip Nolin in second and Will Fairfax/Blake Baade in third. It was a fantastic event for fleet development and for getting young sailors interested in Star boats.
None of this would be possible without the army of volunteers who made this past weekend such a success.
