The post below from , one of my new runners, is exactly why I coach.

The numbers matter, but they’re only part of the picture. The real goal is to understand the athlete in front of me, identify what’s holding them back, and build a process that gets them where they want to go.

The best gauge of progress is watching an athlete feel better, train with confidence again, and believe in what they are really capable of when they are being trained properly is what makes coaching worth it.

________
“By chance, I showed up to a local run club meetup and met Coach Mike at .

We talked for a while about my goals, where I was in my training, and some of the friction points I was dealing with. I honestly can’t pinpoint exactly what he said that initially caught my attention, but the overall message was clear: he not only had the coaching pedigree, but he genuinely had a passion for seeing his athletes succeed.

Within 24 hours, I made the switch from an AI program to a real coach.

I couldn’t be more excited about the progress I’ve made, and just as importantly, how much better I feel physically. My recovery after runs has improved significantly, so much so that even has pointed it out to me numerous times.

Instead of finishing a long run and needing to lie motionless on the floor for 45 minutes, I can actually function…and feel good.

Having someone who takes into account not just the metrics, but also my feedback, and then designs a process specifically for me, while still pushing me outside of my comfort zone, has been a tremendous asset.

If you’re looking to take your training to the next level and focus completely on your goals, I highly recommend reaching out to .

My best is yet to come. 💪🏃‍♂️”

Listen, you probably don’t need more training. You need better coaching.

I see athletes who are willing to work. They will ride more, run more, swim more, add another interval, and push harder, but sometimes more isn’t the answer.

You need to reflect and figure out why you’re not improving.

Why is your FTP not moving?

Why is your position costing you power?

Why are you so fatigued? Are you in a boom and bust cycle?

Why is your run falling apart? Is it because of fitness, mechanics, or how you’re training?

Are you recovering enough to actually adapt?

Does the training approach make sense for your goal?

We need to know the why and you need to check your ego at the door. That’s what I’m looking for as a coach.

I’m not interested in handing every athlete the same workout and calling it a plan, trust me, I have seen it over and over again when I bring someone in.

I want to know what’s happening, why it’s happening, and what we need to change.

Sometimes that means more focused work. Sometimes that means less. Sometimes it means changing the entire approach, but you have to want to make the change to see something different and for a different outcome.

Each athlete that reaches out for coaching gets an interview, we discuss the goals, the frustrations, what they think is going wrong and what they think is going write. We decide if we are a good fit within my approach.

I have prided myself on providing elite level coaching to the everyday athlete and beginners for 11 years. Every athlete gets fitter, faster, but more importantly more educated in training, fueling, nutrition and strength. This is not a do as I say without question. It is an inclusive process where we are partners and partners talk every single day.

If you want to make a change, I am here. Just send me DM and we will see if we are a good fit.

In my never ending quest to provide my clients and athletes multiple brand options to fit in their budget, I am partnering with quickprousa as an authorized dealer. I have always believed coaching should go beyond putting training together, it should assist the athlete with experienced advice in bike fitting and equipment they need and I have done that for 11 years.

The model stays the same: I will provide a pre bike fit purchase consult, we will sit down and build the bike to your fit and decide what level of drivetrain fits your goal and budget, if you are a current coached athlete your pricing will be discounted more than if you weren’t.

After all that discussion, I will order the bike and it will come mostly assembled, saving you in paying for assembly. When it arrives, I finish the final bike fit at no charge due to bike purchase.

It’s that simple and I take all the guesswork out and provide streamlined and high level service, getting you the right bike and you not having to settle.

These bikes are meant to last you a good while and I have seen time and time again folks coming in on the wrong size or remotely for them and I have to be the devils advocate and let them know the frank facts. You are not another sales number to me, I build long term relationships.

This build pictured:
Frame: ER:One
Drivetrain: SRAM Red E1
Chainrings: 52/39
Cranks: 165
Bar: Canwin Carbon 380x 110
Wheels: Vision SL with Ceramic Speed
Pulleys: Ceramic Speed Alpha Pulleys

Why structured coaching gets you faster results.

Most athletes are just guessing or listening to bad advice from other athletes who think they know. Here’s a wake up call, a good athlete does not always make a good coach.

A structured coaching plan gives every workout a purpose based on your current fitness and your goal.

If your FTP needs work, we build the right amount of interval work and progress it over time.

If your run pace is the limiter, we adjust your run volume, intensity, recovery and frequency instead of just adding more miles.

If you’re carrying fatigue, the answer might be less training, not more.

I look at your TrainingPeaks data, power, pace, heart rate, workload, recovery and how you’re actually responding to the training.

Then I adjust the plan to keep you on track.

That’s the part most athletes miss when training on their own. You can find workouts anywhere. The value of a coach is knowing which workout you need, when you need it, how much you need, and when to change it.

That is why coaches athletes progress faster, more efficiently and with way less injury.

This is how you make progress without wasting months doing work that isn’t moving you toward your goal.

Most people see this and think it happened overnight or he’s just been doing this a long time. Nobody sees my frustration with my current state of things, except and she has no idea what I’m talking about😂.

First, this is me, but it could just as easily be one of my athletes. The trend and power/pace might look different, but the process is the same.

I had to take significant time off after a bike crash and pelvic injury. I’m not 100 percent. But I am steadily working back toward normal, and that comes down to how I program and approach my process.

I don’t usually post about myself, but this is an important example of how to go from injured to confident again.

Four weeks ago I was riding at 162W and running like a wounded animal. Now I’m back around 250W and moving much more like myself.

That didn’t happen by chance.

It was four weeks of consistent, intentional progression on the bike and run.

Week 1 was about returning to riding. 23 miles at 162W. The goal was to reintroduce load, assess how my body responded, and focus on symmetry and mechanics.

Weeks 2 and 3 were about building. I gradually increased average power each ride, added small amounts of climbing, and started introducing more torque while maintaining control. I paid close attention to knee and hip tracking the entire time.

Week 4 was the return to normal power. 22 miles at 250W with more climbing. Higher torque, higher sustained output, and most importantly no pain and minimal compensation.

I wasn’t chasing fitness. I was building it on top of stability, strength work, and rehab. Volume, load, and intensity were all progressed with intention.

The biggest mistake I see is athletes trying to jump straight back to high power or fast paces. Depending on your starting point, you might be able to do it for a day. But without structure and progression, it doesn’t last.

That’s where injuries, frustration, and burnout come from.

This was built step by step with intention. Adjusting when needed and progressing.

That’s coaching.

Can you do it on your own? Yes.
Do you need the right plan and approach? Also yes.
