Due to an unfavorable forecast, continued inclement weather, and persistently wet grounds, Race of Champions management has elected to cancel the open practice scheduled for Friday, May 15 at Spencer Speedway.
The facility will now officially open on Friday, May 22 with the 71st Annual Season Opener for the Race of Champions Sportsman Modified Series serving as the highlight of the evening.
“We are making this decision based on utilizing our resources wisely,” stated Joe Skotnicki of Race of Champions. “With additional precipitation forecast for Wednesday, combined with the facility already being extremely wet and limited drying time available, our hands are somewhat forced.
“On race nights, decisions are often made using different criteria, but in this situation we have to look at the bigger picture. The group that has worked to maintain and improve the grounds has put in an incredible amount of effort to have the facility prepared for the season. When we officially open, we want fans and teams to be able to enjoy those efforts — not risk undoing them through unnecessary damage caused by poor conditions.”
