I teach a Qigong system based on animal movements, reinforced by my 20 years as a zoologist and 50 years teaching Tai Chi. Many students have asked me to provide a weekly Zoom class so they can learn this system and bring animal-like mobility and awareness to their bodies.

Students say they realize they have never really felt their bodies before, at least not with this degree of vividness and detail. So here is a link to my blog post describing this system. It has also been taught as a seated system in many nursing homes and senior living communities in my area.

Bob Klein teaches a system of Qigong based on animal movements. He was a zoologist for 20 years, working with hundreds of species both in the wild and in captivity. His 50 years of Tai Chi and Qigong teaching experience ...

More from the book, "Heal Yourself and the World with Tai Chi" by Bob Klein.

A good exercise to develop yielding is to have someone poke you in various parts of your body while practicing form. You continue the form at its pace but yield to each poke and incorporate it into the movement. As you are poked, you blend yielding with returning to the proper position. You will discover which parts of your body are not willing to “play” with outside influences. Those pokes can teach you how you are “closed” to the flow of energy and to your own attention.

The inability of attention to pe*****te some parts of the body or some aspects of the emotional state is, by definition, subconscious. Our practice dissolves this artificial barrier that allows parts of us to hide. Hiding takes a lot of energy and when we practice form or spar, we need as much energy as we can get.

We want the form to be a revelation of our spirit, not a representation of our hiding. Hiding also inhibits you from engaging in activities that might expose what is behind the subconscious barrier. Every hiding part of you that is exposed to your own attention, frees you. This allows all of you to participate in your life and to feel life more fully. It also allows all the cells of the body to function to heal you rather than to hide you, because even the cells are affected by and called upon to assist the hiding.

From the book, "Heal Yourself and the World with Tai Chi" by Bob Klein - the Shamanistic approach to Tai Chi.

One of the most common instructions I give in Push Hands is to “not know” what you are going to do. If you are trapped in “knowing”, then your responses will be limited to that knowing and I, as your partner, can get you tied up in your knowing. Your Push Hands movements should surprise you as much as it surprises me. In this way, the relationship between us reveals your true creative self. Imagine a relationship in which both people are bound up by trying to play the roles their culture has assigned them. They have become their roles. You can’t do traditional Push Hands that way let alone live a joyful life.
You must allow each person to develop their own golden elixir (the balance of the creator and the created personality or "fashioned creature") and not require them to “drink yours”. When the fashioned creature attempts to create other people in its own image, it is taking the place of the God of that other person. The fashioned creature is “known”. God lives in the dragon’s lair – the unknown – the emptiness. The known can only duplicate itself – it is not creative. Duplication is not power. Seat your attention in the emptiness of creation as well as in the product. That balance is the golden elixir.

From the book, "Heal Yourself and the World with Tai Chi" by Bob Klein.

"To lighten the mind requires trusting the flow of intelligence through the body. It requires trusting the skill and creativity of the body. You seek answers within your connection to the world around you rather than in cleverness. Those connections are your professors.
In Push Hands practice, our responses come from our connection to the partner and in knowing his internal state through your touch. You are seeking intelligence in touch. The touch is not a grab because a grab would close the flow of information into you. The lighter the touch that you can use to provide you with information, the less you “give yourself away”.
Students often wonder if the teacher is keeping the deeper training a secret. It is not the teacher who keeps secrets; it’s the student who keeps secrets from himself. If the student learns to be open to information from the teacher and allows that information to affect his body and spirit, then there would be no secrets. The system of Tai-chi is a kind of beauty that one must see and be open to."

This is an update and chance to sign up for the new Zoom Tai Chi/Qigong classes with Bob Klein starting in June. Incredibly detailed training covering the dynamics of energy flow, momentum, attention and breathing for each movement of Tai Chi forms and Qigong.
You will learn the role of each muscle and joint for each movement, how to breathe into each part of the lungs to create movement, identify and learn to let go of behavior patterns that interfere with your practice and much, much more.
There is too much to describe here, so I created a blog post on my website to give you more detail and provide an opportunity to sign up. This is an attempt to preserve traditional Tai Chi as our tradition continues to get watered down.
The principles taught here are applicable to any Tai Chi form and Qigong.

NEW PROGRAM – TRAINING IN TRADITIONAL TAI CHI THROUGH ZOOM
CLASSES WITH BOB KLEIN

The past 50 years have seen a flourishing of “modern Tai Chi” in which the traditional principles have been watered down and even eliminated. This training series, with live classes followed up by each student receiving a link to the recording of the class, is an attempt to preserve the old style, traditional Tai Chi training.

Since it is online, we will concentrate on Qigong and form practice and reserve push hands and sparring practice to future in-person workshops. The training for each movement will be extremely detailed and include posture, alignment, flow of momentum, flow of internal energy, the dynamics of attention, awareness of the function of each muscle and joint, how to discover and dissolve unwanted behavior patterns and tensions and the Taoist philosophy underpinning this practice.

Bob Klein has been teaching Tai-chi-Chuan (meaning the entirety of the practice), since 1975 after studying with Grandmaster William C. C. Chen for many years (and of course, continued studying with him for many years after.) He is the author of three books on Tai-chi-Chuan and over 40 instructional DVDs. Mr. Klein was one of the original teachers at the Tai Chi Farm and later, the Tai Chi Park. He created the Tai Chi Teachers Online Discussion Group. Bob spent 20 years as a zoologist, working with hundreds of species, and has first-hand experience with animal behavior, which forms the basis of Tai Chi movements.

This new online training program (including in-person workshops to come next) will be an opportunity to experience the old way Tai Chi was taught, leading to a transformation of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. It is NOT just about memorizing movements. The principles taught can be applied to any Tai Chi form and any Qigong.
