SPORTS IN KANSAS VOLLEYBALL TEAM TO WATCH: SILVER LAKE HIGH SCHOOL (3A)

Silver Lake enters the 2026 season looking to build on one of the strongest seasons in program history after finishing 46-1 and winning the 3A state championship in 2025. The Eagles also captured the Big East League title and enter the season with 10 state championships in school history, including five during head coach Sarah Johnson’s tenure. Johnson is entering her 19th season as Silver Lake’s head coach with a 571-170 overall record.

Johnson will be assisted by Marissa Griffin and Hillary Lott as Silver Lake replaces several key hitters from last year's championship team. The Eagles return four starters, including a strong group of experienced players who will be counted on to help the program remain among the state's top teams.

Senior setter Kylie Hanni returns as a three-year starter after earning first-team All-State honors in 3A last season. Senior libero Jaylie Whitehead, a four-year starter and first-team All-State selection in 2025, also returns to anchor the team in the back row. Junior outside hitter Karys Deiter, a three-year starter who earned second-team All-State honors last season, and junior middle hitter Kinley Weber, a two-year starter, round out the key returning group.

“Coming off of a season like 2025 and graduating some key hitters, we definitely have some work to do to get back to that caliber of play. However, with some core ball control veterans back in Jaylie and Kylie and some strong offensive threats coming from Karys and Kinley, as well as some eager players to fill some open spots, I’m optimistic that we have the potential to put in the work to be back at state this year and to be a strong competitor in the Big East League.”

With a proven core, championship experience and four returning starters, Silver Lake will look to reload rather than rebuild in 2026 and position itself for another deep postseason run.
