Shepherd Football Update

We would like to share that our Head Varsity Football Coach has resigned as he and his family will be relocating out of state. We thank him for his dedication to our student-athletes and wish him the very best in his new adventure.

With summer conditioning underway and the season quickly approaching, we believe consistency is important for our players. To ensure a smooth transition, Owen Russell has agreed to serve as Interim Varsity Football Coach for the 2026 season.

Coach Russell has many years of coaching experience and currently serves as an assistant coach within our program. We are excited for his leadership and look forward to a great season ahead.

Please join us in thanking Coach Angell and welcoming Coach Russell to his new role.

Angell coached the Blue Jays for two seasons, compiling a 7-11 record. After a 2-7 finish in his first season, Shepherd improved to 5-4 in 2025, marking the program’s highest win total since 2022.

Shepherd Football Community,
Coach Angell has accepted an opportunity out of state, and his last day with the program will be tomorrow. While we are greatly saddened to see him go, we are extremely thankful for the impact he has made on the program. We wish him and his family all the best.

Coach Owen Russell will be our 2026 interim Varsity Head Coach going forward, and we are in great and capable hands. Our goal is to make this transition for our players as easy as possible, and the success of our program and the 2026 season are of utmost priority. Shepherd Football is ALL IN, thank you for your continued support! Go BlueJays!

🚨 📢 PSA to all BlueJay lifters/athletes: 📢 🚨

Make sure you are eating breakfast! Especially simple carbohydrates.

Carbs are what fuel your workouts. If you are underfueled, you are not getting the most out of your workouts. We cannot run a supercharged engine on an empty tank!

Breakfast does not have to be complicated! Here are some easy examples:

Banana or berries, juice, honey, white bread toast, cream of rice, rice crispy/poptart (last resort), or anything you can get your hands on!

Coaches pre-lift ⛽️: cream of rice with bananas and frozen berries with honey drizzled on top with a dash of celtic salt! (With a protein coffee of course).

Another reason carbs are important for athletes is hydration! For every gram of stored glycogen, your body retains 3g of water.

Last but not least, if you are burning carbs during your workout, make sure you replenish with carbs after. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need protein right after your workouts. As long as you get the adequate amount of protein throughout the day (.8-1g / lb of body weight) you are good to go! (Yes you can have more than 30g of protein in one sitting).

We cannot build a brick house without the proper materials.

Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Team Defensive Camp today in Big Rapids!
A special thank you to the Ferris State University defensive coaching staff and Defensive Coordinator Hodges for hosting a great day of competition and learning.

We had the opportunity to compete against Kingston, John Glenn, Big Rapids, and Clare. It was a tremendous experience for our players to bond as a team, compete, and continue getting better.

Unfortunately, we didn't do a great job taking pictures throughout the day, but the photo posted is of our D-Line group.

But understand this — life is hard. No matter who you are, there are bumps and bruises and hits along the way. And my advice is to prepare yourself. Because football lessons teach us that success and achievement come from overcoming adversity and that team accomplishment far exceeds anyone’s individual goals. -Tom Brady
