Tip of the Day: Mastering Shotgun Recoil

Many shooters are taught to simply pull a shotgun tightly into their shoulder. While common, that approach can lead to increased fatigue, reduced balance, less control, and an overall shooting experience that may discourage new shooters from continuing with the sport.

In this video, Joe White, Senior Range Officer at the Indian River County Public Shooting Range, demonstrates the Push-Pull Technique—a proven method for managing recoil and improving firearm control. By creating opposing pressure with your hands while maintaining a proper stance, shooters can significantly reduce felt recoil, minimize muzzle rise, and stay on target more effectively.

The result? Greater control, increased confidence, and a more enjoyable shooting experience that keeps shooters coming back to the range.

Watch the video and learn how proper technique can make all the difference.

A world champion recently took aim at the Indian River County Public Shooting Range.

This week, we were proud to welcome Madeleine Russell, one of the most accomplished young athletes in international clay target shooting, for a practice session at our facility. Russell is the Junior World Champion, Junior European Champion, and Junior World Cup Champion in Olympic S***t, representing Great Britain on the world stage.

Hosting elite competitors like Madeleine highlights the quality of our shooting sports facilities and reinforces the Indian River County Public Shooting Range's reputation as a destination for shooters of all skill levels—from first-time participants to world-class champions.

We thank Madeleine for choosing Indian River County as part of her training journey and wish her continued success in competition.

Big catches, big smiles, and memories that last a lifetime!

Did you know the IRC Public Shooting Range features a stocked kids fishing lake designed to help introduce young anglers to the joy of fishing? Just ask 6-year-old Izzy, who recently reeled in both a bass and a tilapia during her visit!

Fishing at the lake is free and open to adults accompanied by a child. Simply bring your own bait, and if you need a fishing rod, loaner rods are available at no additional cost through the Main Office.

Whether you're looking to unplug, spend quality time outdoors, or help a child experience the excitement of catching their very first fish, the Kids Fishing Lake is the perfect destination. Pack up the family, grab some bait, and make your next outdoor adventure one to remember!

For more information, call (772) 226-3096.

Knowing your firearm means understanding how it functions — and choosing the right ammunition matters more than many shooters realize. At the IRC Public Shooting Range, we often see guests purchase budget tactical semi-auto shotguns for home defense, only to experience cycling issues when using lighter target or birdshot loads. In most cases, the firearm isn’t defective — it’s simply designed to run heavier defensive loads like buckshot or slugs.

Before purchasing a firearm, take the time to research the ammunition it was built to cycle reliably. A little knowledge goes a long way toward improving performance, reliability, and safety at the range.

Train smarter. Shoot safer. Know your firearm.

TIP OF THE DAY: BEWARE THE SQUIB!

A squib occurs when a bullet gets lodged in the barrel instead of exiting. Firing another round can cause catastrophic damage and serious injury.

Watch for these warning signs:
Quieter pop than usual
Significantly reduced recoil
No bullet impact on target

If you notice ANY of these, stop immediately, keep your firearm pointed downrange, and flag down a Range Officer.
Safety first — always.
