Aquatic center will offer safety education

I have been an aquatic educator for over 30 years. Having served as an appointed commissioner and elected chairman of the NYS Temporary Commission to Prevent Childhood Drowning, I know firsthand about the importance of aquatic education in New York state.

Aquatic education is a life-skill. The National Drowning Prevention Alliance has designated swimming our First Sport; we were first exposed to swimming in-utero and then during bath time. Water is everywhere, and we need to be able to interact with it with respect while we are in, on, and around water.

The future Capital Regional Aquatic Center, which will be located near SUNY Schenectady, will be a premier aquatic facility for the region and the state. It will be the largest aquatic center in northeast New York with 1,200 seating capacity. It will allow year-round aquatic training.

Access to year-round aquatic facilities is the only way to teach skill-based aquatic education.

This facility will be used for learn-to-swim, competitive swim, lifeguard training, swim instruction, recreational activities, adapted swim instruction and more.

There is a void in the Capital Region for aquatic education. The Capital Regional Aquatic Center will create more opportunities for obtaining aquatic education.

But they’ll never stop being the person swimming helped them become.

The early mornings taught discipline.
The hard sets built resilience.
The losses taught humility.
The victories built confidence.
The teammates became lifelong friends.

Those lessons don’t stay at the pool.

They show up in classrooms.
In careers.
In relationships.
In the way they face life’s hardest moments.

Because swimming doesn’t just shape an athlete for a season.

It shapes a person for a lifetime.

And that’s a gift no stopwatch could ever measure. 🩵🏊
