This is one of those things that made me go “why didn’t anyone tell me this?”

When a battery stud fails and the top post reads fine, the issue is almost always caused by internal corrosion, over tightening, or a broken internal connection that links the two.

Because a battery’s internal lead strap connects to the top post first and then branches off to the side stud, the stud is highly susceptible to losing electrical contact if that junction fails.

Running off of the post might save that battery for a while! Having good testers, keeping things clean, and a bit of knowledge can make owning a boat a lot easier and less expensive!

Why do some places only get one tide a day? ⬇️

The moon creates two tidal bulges on earth. As earth rotates beneath the bulges, most places experience two highs and two lows during a lunar day, which is about 24 hours and 50 minutes long. Not exactly 24, because the moon is moving in its orbit, too.

If there were no continents, this would be easy to understand, but like ripples in a bucket of water, things slosh around. The Gulf is a partially enclosed basin and the water comes primarily through the Yucatán channel and the Straits of Florida. The dimensions of the gulf have a natural oscillation period - a resonance - closer to a diurnal tidal frequency (24 hours) than to a more familiar semidiurnal frequency (12.42 - half of a lunar day).

Think of it like a swing. Push it at the right time, it grows. Push it at the wrong time, it’s weak or even cancelled out. It’s not always like this, we get mixed tides, too, but usually the semidiurnal signal is weakened. There’s still two tides, just one is basically cancelled out.

There’s a lot of cool math about things, so for those interested- basically… the natural gulf basin resonance favors the 23.9 hour sidereal (defined as K1) tidal constituent, amplifying diurnal tides and suppresses much of the 12.42 hour (M2) semidiurnal tide, leaving us with one dominant tide a day.

Some of you know I’ve been posting some observations and perspectives lately. After some feedback and a lot of questions and messages, we’ve decided to start a series of Tip Tuesday’s.

We’ll cover everything - oceanography, physics, fish behavior, astronomy, maintenance, and anything else that comes up to try and help people understand some things they don’t notice. I think the more you know - the better your time on the water can be.

The big point in all of this is to ask the question “why” more often. Curiosity is probably my favorite human trait, a huge sign of intelligence, and it’s not always shown. People should question everything. It’s also amazing how different experiences from people’s lives can be applied to different fields when people share them.

Stay tuned for whatever topics come next, and feel free to ask anything you might be thinking. Even you flat earthers who’ve come after me on previous videos.
