Know and understand the law where you carry, including when you travel.

On Oct. 14, an armed guard at Fort Worth's La Gran Plaza shot a masked man who had smashed a jewelry kiosk with a hammer and was running for the exit. Police say the man never threatened anyone with the hammer. The guard is charged with murder and is presumed innocent.

Texas Penal Code 9.42 can allow deadly force to stop a nighttime thief escaping with property, but only under strict conditions. California and Arizona don't allow deadly force to protect property alone.

Same act. Different state. Different outcome. Learn your rules before you need them.

A training video from a Colombian security company is making the rounds, and it's hard to watch. In under a minute, the instructor sweeps a loaded pistol across his own students in a small room. Every student deserves this standard:

1. Treat every gun as loaded.
2. Never point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you're on target.
4. Know your target and what's beyond it.

An instructor who can't follow those rules shouldn't be teaching them. Before you pay for a class, ask how live guns are handled in the classroom.

Police say a security guard told a man to leave Nashville's Greyhound station. About 45 minutes later, the man threw hot coffee in the guard's face, knocked him down twice, and hit him in the head with a magazine from the guard's vest. When the guard got up and the man moved toward him again, the guard fired.

Hot coffee alone isn't deadly-force justification. Repeated knockdowns and blows to the head with a hard object can create a reasonable fear of death or great bodily injury.

Police say video captured the fight and, after consulting the DA, called it self-defense. The attacker is charged with felony aggravated assault.

On December 2, the Supreme Court hears Viramontes v. Cook County and Grant v. Higgins. The question is whether the Second Amendment protects AR-15-style ri**es owned by millions of law-abiding Americans.

Cook County and Connecticut have filed briefs defending their bans, and the United States filed in support of the challengers.

The ruling directly decides only those two bans. California's assault weapons ban isn't before the Court, but a win for the challengers would put it in serious doubt. Arizona has no such ban. Duncan v. Bonta, California's magazine case, remains pending and is likely being held.

A ruling is expected by summer 2027.

On Oct 21 a federal judge in Western New York struck down the state's 2022 ban on civilians buying body armor, holding that body armor is an "arm" protected by the Second Amendment. The order is on hold for 14 days so New York can appeal, and it only covers New York.

In California, buying armor is legal unless you have a violent felony conviction or are barred from owning fi****ms. In Arizona there's no purchase ban, but wearing or using body armor during any felony is a separate felony.
