Wanted to take a minute to talk about something that comes up a lot: shaving double-coated dogs. 🐶✂️

I live in St. George — think Phoenix/Vegas-level heat and desert. 🔥🏜️ I have a Pyrenees/Lab mix. If you don’t know, Great Pyrenees were bred to be mountain guardian dogs. They’re self-motivated, intelligent, and independent thinkers. 💪🧠

Miss Haven went outside with me this morning before the sun was up. 🌅 After about 15 minutes in 80° weather (with water available 💧), she was panting hard and wanted back inside. 🥵 She loves being outside, but for the past week all she’s wanted to do is stay in because of the heat. She barely moves when it’s this hot — and this is why I shave her. Her gums were so red this morning from overheating that I had to really focus on cooling her down. ❄️🧊

So yes, I do shave her. ✂️ Do I think every dog should be shaved? No. I don’t think it’s all-or-nothing. It depends on lifestyle, environment, and the individual dog. 🤷‍♀️❤️

On another note… check out what Sammy’s owner put together for him — and he loves it (since I can't post both photos and video at the same time, check the first comment to see a video of Sammy)! 😍🐴💙

While we already have misters and fans (and more portable cooling machines on the way 🌀), this has been another big help. He’s a senior and overheats quickly, so we have to stay on top of it even though he enjoys being outside. ☀️💦

My barn is insulated, has a swamp cooler, fans, and misters… but even with everything running full throttle it still hits over 90° for a few hours. 🌡️😓 Still hunting for an easier (and more financially realistic) way to manage the heat. Stay tuned for the progress… or the “never do that again” learning lessons 😂🔧🐴

Doesn’t matter if you’re new, a repeat client, or have left reviews in the past. Reviews help other clients know exactly what to expect and they help the search algorithm so people can find us more easily! 🙌

Check out the 2nd pic with our first client to take advantage of this — she stayed with us last night! 🐴❤️

Please note that our peak season starts in September and runs through May, so reservations in advance are very appreciated! We are fully booked August 2nd – 10th. 📅

If you’ve stayed with us in the past, just shoot us a text of when (and what) you want to reserve.

If you’re new here, please fill out the legal paperwork first at horsehavenranch (.org) 📝

Please also note that we are a small facility, so it’s important to reach out in advance and make sure we have space/accommodations. We always buffer our clients’ horses and will never put yours next to another client’s without a stall in between. ✅

Did you know Google reviews do way more than just tell people what to expect? ⭐

Google’s algorithm actually updates based on reviews every single day—and the more recent the review, the better the ranking a business gets! 📈

So many of our clients tell us they found us through Google, and we want to make it even easier for more horse owners to discover Horse Haven Ranch. 🐴

Starting today we’re offering something new:

Leave us a Google review during your stay and we’ll give you **10% off** your boarding! 🎉

It doesn’t matter if you’re a brand-new client, a returning one, or if you’ve left us a review in the past. We just started this today and already two clients are super excited to help us out! 💪

Wanted to show you the depth of planning and forethought that goes into preparing for your arrival! 🐴✨

Take a look at this run. Even though we have a sunshade and misters, we know that if the feeder sits in the sun it will get hot — and we don’t want burnt noses. ☀️ So we carefully watch how the shade moves throughout the day (see the shade from the carport?) and position the feeder and water so that no matter where the sun is, your horse stays in the shade.

We also place everything on the side of the fence where your horse can see other horses. Horses are herd animals and feel most comfortable eating close to (and preferably facing) others. We want your horse relaxed and eating well, so we do everything we can to support that. 💚

We provide Horse Hydrator filtered water that removes all smells and tastes so your horses actually drink. 💧 We have a wash rack if they need to be cooled down, and electrolytes on hand. Being horse-obsessed with real horse sense means we know how to take vitals when needed, check for dehydration, and notify you right away if anything seems off. In fact, we’ve stayed ahead of two colics that we saw coming!

Night checks are a standard part of our service so both you and we can sleep better. 🌙 Add in a secure, private facility and your peace of mind is as high as it gets — even if you’re not staying on-site with your horse. We also send photos and updates so you stay connected. 📸

Speaking of booking — while we do take emergency clients when possible, we ask that you reserve in advance. It helps us prepare everything properly so your horse has the best experience. ✅

Planning a future stay? September kicks off our peak season (through May) and it books up quickly. Be sure to complete the legal paperwork for your first stay and let us know when (and what) you’d like to reserve.

From our open round pen and spacious runs to the luxury stall suites with runs (or the luxury stalls themselves), we have options to keep your horse comfortable at a premium level. And don’t forget — you can stay comfortable too in our on-site King Suite that’s received so many rave reviews. 🏡 Check our Google reviews to see more!

🌾 The boys are absolutely LOVING their soaked hay right now!

For the time being, I’m just watering it down/rinsing it well to help with Licorice’s coughing… and it’s working great! Caspian used to fling his Hay Pillows into his water bucket every single time, but now that they’re pre-soaked he doesn’t bother — total win-win.

Soaking gives us cleaner hay, gets extra water into them (always a plus in this heat), and slows down their eating, which is perfect for these little hay monsters.

This is Teff hay — such an awesome forage! Technically a legume hay like alfalfa, but with a different amino acid profile. Think of it like broccoli for horses: high fiber, great protein, slow-digesting carbs, and especially helpful for allergy issues (yes, some horses are actually allergic to grass hay!).

Even with how clean this hay is, look at the dirt that comes out after just a quick soak!

A few clients suggested steaming, but those units run $1,200–$3,000. I’m getting the same benefits in just a couple minutes with plain water — no fancy equipment needed. It does add about 30-60 extra minutes a day since I feed 4-5 times, but it’s worth it for happy, healthier boys.
On another note… it’s still fecking hot in St. George (as usual 😂). My client/friend Holly has an amazing Big Ass Fan evaporative cooler that gave me a great idea for the front of the barn. I’m looking at a more affordable version (a couple hundred bucks instead of thousands). Even with climate control, without a full AC unit in the barn it can still get tough for a couple hours a day.

Stay tuned for updates — especially if you follow for barn/life hacks!

My little Lic Lic has been dealing with quite a few challenges — insulin resistance, sweet itch (those nasty gnat & fly saliva allergies), sticky stifle, hard feet, and asthma that flares up especially during workouts or high winds.

But I’m so proud of how far he’s come! I’ve dialed in his formula, and his coat has gone from dry, patchy, bloody, and miserably itchy to smooth, shiny, and show-quality. 🥹❤️

With these recent high winds kicking up his coughing, we tried something new: watering down his hay right in his Hay Pillow! I wasn’t sure if he’d go for it… but not only does he eat it happily, it smells sweeter and richer to him, and a ton of dust came off too. Win-win for his lungs!

Current supplement lineup for my adorable non-show show pony 😂:
- Camelina Oil
- Medalist Sprout Pellets
- MadBarn AT+
- MadBarn Spirulina
- Hydroxyzine HCL (vet Rx for allergies)
- Crackdown (hoof support)
- Teff hay
- Optiwize (joints)
- And of course… Hay Pillows ❤️

Yesterday I took all three boys out for a walk at the same time — by hand. Wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but it actually went pretty well! Caspian and Licorice were both determined to be frontrunners, so it looked like I was pulling a mini draft team with a large horse in tow 😂

It got me daydreaming about training these two to harness… until I looked up the equipment and costs. Yeahhh… we’re gonna wait on that one 😂 Neither is broke to ride yet, so no bridles or saddles in their history (other than me leaning over them for laughs!).

But how cute would that be? Lic and Cass pulling me in a little cart with Artax trotting alongside like the handsome es**rt he is. A girl can dream!

Who else has ponies with big personalities and even bigger hearts?

The quiet moments after feeding... when the barn is perfectly cool, calm, and clean, and every horse is happily and quietly munching away in peace.

That right there? That’s the magic. That’s the why. ❤️🐴

Does it make financial sense to have three rescued ponies who are basically the world’s most spoiled barn dogs living their best lives in a six-stall business? On paper, probably not. But these three — Artax, Caspian, and Licorice — they’re my heart. My everything. Most of my clients have between 1-3 horses with a few shows barns around 6-7. So when the demand hits, we just do a little re-arranging dance.

From the excited nickers the second they see me, to the soft muzzle kisses, to those happy tippy-tap feet when they run around...

Watching Artax after a good round pen — that deep sigh of relief, then proudly walking into the center of the pen and licking his lips like he just conquered the world.

Caspian nickering loudly every single time he spots me, trying so hard to be patient while I feed everyone, and then turning around to shower me with muzzle kisses.

And sweet Licorice... whose coat was once patchy and uncomfortable from sweet itch when he first came to me. Now he’s shiny, healthy, and thriving thanks to consistent care and the right balance of supplements for all my horses.

Then there’s the big guy — Sammy, my giant heart horse even though he’s not mine. Coming back after time away, finding his comfort zone again, and settling right back into his 5-star suite like he never left.

All of it — every early morning, every late night, every supplement balanced, every worry carried — is for them.

It’s not about the money. It’s about earning the money to keep this place going for them.

And when I walk out and see my three puppers curled up sleeping in the breezeway because the barn is just that perfectly cool after all the work and investment to make it climate controlled? My heart melts all over again.

This is why we do what we do at Horse Haven Ranch. For the nickers, the kisses, the quiet contentment, and the unconditional love that makes every hard day worth it.

Slowly but surely the word-of-mouth is spreading from our clients about our facility, and our growth is happening because of you. So to everyone who's told someone about us, or left us a review so other can find us - from the bottom of our hearts - thank you.

❤️ **Today... TODAY is the BEST day!** ❤️

For a year and a half, my barn and I have been missing our beloved “special guest.” But guess what?!

**SAMMY AND JULIE ARE BACK!!!!** 🎉

The moment they pulled in, Sammy heard my voice and called right out to me. He settled straight into his stall, diving into his hay and water like he never left — recognizing his friend and his favorite spot.

Anytime he’s traveled before, it would take a full week for him to settle in. Today? He was home immediately. What an incredible, heart-filling gift. 🥹

Everyone please say hello to the one and only Sammy and his wonderful mom Julie Green Dean !

Welcome back, big guy. You’ve been missed so much. ❤️

**Ready for our special guests tomorrow at Horse Haven Ranch!** 🐴✨

So much behind-the-scenes work today to get everything perfect! Our mystery special guest arrives in the morning (stay tuned — I can’t wait to share who it is! 👀), followed by a wonderful return client later in the afternoon.

That meant spiffing up stalls, connecting feeders, prepping fresh water buckets (filled right before arrival for maximum freshness), shining up the barn, swapping out a couple clogged misters, and adding shades to the front for extra comfort in this heat. I also got the client suite all cozy and ready for our human guests!

The boys got shuffled around today too — I’m thinking through a long-term setup that will make maneuvers smoother whenever clients come and go. More on that soon!

In other exciting news… I treated myself to **new notebooks for “school”** and a bunch of those awesome Amazon colored pens. Anyone else get ridiculously fired up to study when you crack open a fresh notebook and break out the pretty pens? 📓🖊️✨

(If you’re a visual learner like me, you get it!)

Who else is prepping hard this weekend? Drop a ❤️ if you’re team fresh-notebook motivation!

✨ Just finished painting the barn stalls and I’d love your honest feedback on the color! 🐴
The color turned out different than I expected — it’s not quite as bright as I pictured, but I actually really like the softer tone and the matte finish. It feels calm and clean, perfect for our equine guests during these hot St. George summers.
What do you think? Does it work for a barn, or would you tweak it? I talked to my husband about the idea of switching the interior of the barn color with the new panel look, doing something like a brown instead of a cream? Or does it look good as a cream?

Drop your thoughts below — I truly value your opinions! ❤️
