September’s memory verse and message for athletes:

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23

September is Su***de Prevention Month, and as your coach, I need you to understand something that is bigger than any game we will ever play:

I care about the person you are more than the player you are.

I know this game can get heavy.

Playing time. Starting positions. Coach’s decisions. Mistakes. Injuries. Expectations. Recruiting. Comparison. Feeling overlooked. Feeling like you’ve worked too hard to not get the opportunity you believe you deserve.

And when you love the game, those things don’t just affect you physically, they can start affecting you mentally and emotionally too.

But hear me: DO NOT let this game convince you that your role is your worth. You may not get the innings you want. You may not understand a coach’s decision. You may have a season that looks nothing like what you prayed or worked for.

Be disappointed. Be frustrated. Ask questions. Keep working.

But don’t lose yourself trying to prove yourself.

Your name is bigger than a stat sheet.
Your purpose is bigger than a depth chart.
Your future is bigger than this season.
And your life is worth infinitely more than any game.

Coaches make decisions about lineups, positions and playing time. Those decisions are about the game, they are not a measurement of your value as a human being.

So guard your mind.

Don’t suffer silently because you think being an athlete means you always have to be “strong.” Sometimes strength looks like saying:

“Coach, I’m struggling.”
“I need somebody to talk to.”
“I’m not doing well mentally.”

There is NO weakness in that.

And teammates, check on each other. Not just the teammate who is crying or obviously struggling. Check on the funny one. The quiet one. The one who lost their starting spot. The one who seems angry lately. The one who says, “I’m good,” a little too quickly.

I want you to win. I want you to compete. I want you to become the best athlete you can become. But more than any of that…

I want you healthy.
I want you whole.
I want you here.

The game matters.

BUT YOU matter more. 💜🩵

Love you, Coach Mary

BENCH TO BREAKTHROUGH: Raising Mentally Tough Athletes in School Sports: A Parent & Player Series on Playing Time, Pressure, and Character

Episode 3: “Don’t Let Playing Time Define Your Confidence”

One of the biggest dangers in youth sports is tying self-worth to minutes played.

Starting doesn’t equal greatness. Sitting doesn’t equal failure.

A coach’s decision is information—not identity.

Instead of:
“I’m not playing, so I must not be good.”

Think:
“I’m not playing as much as I want. What can I improve?”

One mindset breaks confidence. The other builds competitors.

Real confidence is built on consistency, not circumstances.

Scripture:
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7

Next, we’ll learn how to have one of the most important conversations in sports—the right way to talk to your coach.

🥎 THE MOST UNDERRATED PITCH IN YOUTH SOFTBALL?

The CHANGEUP.

A great target is roughly:

🔥 Fast pitch: 52 mph
🐢 Changeup: 40–44 mph

That’s an 8–12 mph difference.

But speed difference alone isn’t enough.

A GREAT changeup needs:

✓ Similar arm speed
✓ Similar delivery
✓ Good location
✓ Confidence to throw it behind in the count
✓ Enough speed separation to disrupt timing

Think about this:

Would you rather face…

56…56…56…

OR

52…52…42…52…42…52?

Hitting is timing.

Pitching is disrupting timing.

Develop the changeup EARLY. 🥎

OBP: The Number More Youth Players Should Understand

Player goes:

0-for-2.

Mom asks:

“How’d you hit?”

Player says:

“Terrible. I didn’t get a hit.”

Except she also walked twice.

She reached base in 2 of 4 plate appearances.

That’s a .500 day from an on-base standpoint.

That’s offensive production.

Batting average asks:

Did you get a hit?

On-base percentage asks:

How often did you reach base instead of making an out?

That’s an important distinction.

As a practical youth performance framework:

Below .300 OBP: needs improvement300–.349: developing350–.399: solid400–.449: very good450+: excellent500+: exceptional

These aren’t official national youth averages. They’re ranges we can use to start evaluating performance.

Teach young hitters that a walk isn’t a failed at-bat.

Winning the strike zone matters.

The best hitters aren’t just difficult to strike out. They’re difficult to get OUT.

BENCH TO BREAKTHROUGH: Raising Mentally Tough Athletes in School Sports: A Parent & Player Series on Playing Time, Pressure, and Character

Episode 2: “It’s Okay to Be Disappointed—But Don’t Stay There”

Mental toughness doesn’t mean pretending you don’t care.

Athletes (and parents) can be disappointed, frustrated, or upset. The key is what they do next.

There’s a difference between feeling disappointment and being controlled by it.

Players NOR parents control coaching decisions, playing time, or rotations.

But they do control:

* Attitude
* Effort
* Body language
* Response to adversity
* Character when things don’t go their way

That’s where mental toughness begins. What are we teaching our athletes when these times of disappointment arise?

Scripture:
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair.” — 2 Corinthians 4:8

Next up, we’ll talk about one of the biggest confidence killers in sports—and how to stop letting playing time define your identity.

WE ARE IN THE PRIME OF SCHOOL BALL SEASON HERE IN GA!

Follow along for this Series of:
“BENCH TO BREAKTHROUGH: Raising Mentally Tough Athletes in School Sports”

A Parent & Player Series on Playing Time, Pressure, and Character

Episode 1: “When the Season Doesn’t Go the Way You Hoped”

One of the hardest parts of school sports has very little to do with the scoreboard.

It’s what happens when a player doesn’t get the role they thought they earned.

They worked all summer. They showed up to workouts. They sacrificed other things. They believed this might finally be their year.

And then the season starts—and they’re sitting on the bench.

Maybe someone else is playing ahead of them. Maybe they don’t understand the coach’s decisions. Maybe they feel overlooked. Maybe they believe they are better than the person getting the opportunity.

And sometimes, they may even be right.

So what do you do when reality doesn’t match expectation?

That answer can shape a young athlete far beyond this season.

Scripture:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” — James 1:2–3

In this series, we will walk through the hardest parts of school sports: disappointment, confidence, communication with coaches, gossip, unfairness, and how to turn frustration into growth. Most importantly, we will learn how these moments are not wasted—they are shaping who you become for life.

Next Episode:
We start with the most important truth every athlete must learn: it’s okay to be disappointed—but you can’t stay there.

We have teamed up with 12:11 Fitness to help with athlete development. These girls have put in the work and results after just their first round of training has already proven successful!

Building strong, powerful, quick athletes doesn’t come from just field/cage work—it begins with the body and training it move more efficiently with power and speed.

GREAT JOB! 💪🏼🥰

🥎What Does a .300 Batting Average Actually Mean?

A .300 hitter gets approximately 3 hits for every 10 official at-bats.

Simple enough.

But here’s where youth travel softball gets complicated.

A .400 hitter playing a weak schedule isn’t necessarily a better hitter than a .325 hitter facing elite pitching every weekend.

Then add:

Scorekeeping differences.

Errors scored as hits.

Small sample sizes.

Different tournament levels.

Different pitching quality.

That’s why batting average needs CONTEXT.

As a practical coaching framework — not an official national youth standard — I like thinking about AVG in broad ranges:

Below .250: struggling statistically250–.299: developing/contributing300–.349: solid350–.399: very good400+: excellent statistical production450+: exceptional — but let’s examine the competition and sample size

Here’s the important part:

Don’t chase a batting average. Develop a hitter.

Good swings don’t always become hits.

Bad swings sometimes do.

Over enough plate appearances, quality usually starts winning.
