Over the next week we are going to share a series of messages to familiarize you with Exeter United FC, the programs we offer to any interested youth soccer players in our area and help you understand how to navigate these options to have your child participate in the beautiful game. These messages are intended to answer most, if not all your questions based on the most frequent questions we have seen repeatedly for years.
Today we will provide you with a description of the year-round PROGRAMS that Exeter United FC offers.
INTRAMURAL
EUFC provides an in-house Intramural soccer program for our youngest players in the Under-5 (U5) through Under-8 (U8) age groups. Players can choose from Intramural sessions in the FALL, WINTER (indoor), and the SPRING. We try to keep registration costs for these programs very low to encourage maximum participation. Our Intramural program focuses on development and basic skills in a fun and encouraging environment. The FALL season is our biggest season with individual teams and regularly scheduled games. The Intramural program is organized and administered by our U5/6 and U7/8 Coordinators who utilize volunteers to coach and lead during each of the three sessions throughout the year. All Intramural program activities are held on fields throughout Exeter Township, normally twice per week (Sundays only for WINTER). Uniforms/shirts are provided for each season and included in the registration fee.
RECREATIONAL TRAVEL
All players U9 or older joining EUFC will play in our Travel program. While all players in the U9 through U12 age groups attend tryouts, no players are ever ‘cut’ from our Recreational Travel program. Every child looking to play with EUFC will be placed on a team (as long as we have enough registered players to form one). We can normally accommodate players even if they are unable to attend tryouts.
Recreational Travel is offered during the FALL and SPRING seasons. Prior to each season team rosters are formed by our Travel Director (along with Committee recommendations). Rosters are built by grouping like-skilled players based upon tryout results and historical knowledge of players who previously played with EUFC. Each team is assigned a volunteer Head Coach and one or more Assistant Coaches among the parents of that team. Travel teams are more autonomous and managed/guided by our Travel Director.
Recreational Travel is designed for ALL skill/experience levels and welcomes players new to the game. These teams are placed in either the Reading-Berks Junior Soccer League (RBJSL) or the Suburban Counties Soccer League (SCSL). Typically, teams in the U9 through U13 age groups are placed in RBJSL which has 2-3 different competition levels we can match to the skill level of each team. SCSL gives us the opportunity to keep kids playing through U18 who just want to play/have fun but are not looking for competitive soccer. SCSL is dedicated to recreational level play (no scores/no records) for all and does not even permit players registered for competitive travel. Our SCSL teams are normally COED and have had great experiences over the last 5-6 years we have been involved with this league. EUFC is eager to find more boys & girls in the U14 to U18 age groups looking to have fun and just keep playing the game.
Recreational Travel teams practice twice per week on school or municipal fields throughout Exeter Township. Home games for these leagues are also held on these same fields. Away games are primarily in the Berks Co. area for RBJSL and Berks/Montgomery Co. area for SCSL and should rarely if ever exceed 60 minutes.
EUFC Recreational Travel registration fees are kept low relative to other similar grassroots clubs in our area but are higher than our Intramural program to cover league and referee fees associated with Travel teams. Also, Recreational Travel players must purchase a Capelli uniform kit separately from registration. These uniforms are then used over multiple Travel seasons until outgrown, lost or we introduce a new design (occurs every 3 years).
Recreational Travel teams are permitted to play in TOURNAMENTS but only if the individual coach/team wishes to do so. All costs associated with this would need to be covered by the team. Tournaments are available but can be limited for teams at this competitive level.
COMPETITIVE TRAVEL
Selected players U9 or older in EUFC will be invited to play in our Competitive Travel program. This program is designed for our more skilled/dedicated players and intended to keep Exeter kids playing together longer with our club. EUFC will form Competitive Travel teams based upon our assessment of tryouts. We are not able to offer Competitive Travel for all age groups/genders. This will be dependent upon having enough players ready for this level of play and a coach with the appropriate knowledge/experience willing to manage a team under this program.
Competitive Travel is offered as a year-round program including a FALL league season, WINTER indoor training and possible league play, a SPRING league season, and multiple TOURNAMENTS. Competitive Travel with EUFC is our alternative to having skilled players from our area leave the club to join a local premier level club. While the cost for this program is higher than the Recreational Travel program, it is only about one quarter the cost of a premier club. More importantly, we can keep friends, neighbors, and classmate playing together longer while still developing in a more competitive environment. Eventually, this can benefit our soccer community when these boys & girls play for Exeter Junior High & High School.
EUFC places our Competitive Travel teams in leagues that offer premier-level competition such as EDP, the Central League, or Rock Spring League. The travel associated with these leagues is typically higher than Recreational Travel teams but not usually more than 60-90 minutes.
Competitive Travel players must purchase a Capelli uniform kit separately from registration which adds an alternate 3rd jersey helping to differentiate these teams/players. This again is used for multiple years.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS
**Summer Kick-arounds**: These are open scrimmage sessions offered free of charge for any registered Travel player; offered once per week every July.
**Annual Club Picnic**: Near the start of every FALL season, EUFC holds a free picnic for all members including food, activities and lots of fun. All FALL teams have professional photos taken which can be purchased at your choice.
**Camps/Clinics**: While we do not have a set schedule for these, our Board is always working to give our players additional development opportunities. We recently offered goalkeeper training over the winter, which saw more interest than we could accommodate. EUFC has also partnered with the Exeter HS Girls team to offer a 2-day camp this June for boys or girls entering 1st to 8th grades for just $40.
Finally, we wish to stress that we are always here to assist and answer your questions at any time. Email is the best way to do so, and email addresses for each of our Board members can be found on our website (exeterunitedfc.com) under the ‘About Us’ heading. Don’t worry if you’re not sure who to contact. All our Board members collaborate and will ensure you get an answer or get connected to the right person to answer your question.
