When Cathy Rickett was the DCLGA Games Chairperson in 2003,she'd recently lost one of her best friends to breast cancer so she decided to devote a Thursday league day to raising money for breast cancer as the "game of the day".She named it, "Rally For The Cure". The approximately 30 lady golfers game fee would go towards this cause, as well as any chip-ins,closies,skins, and any donations, if one chose to do so. The total amount which was then a few hundred dollars would go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation with the hopes of this money being used in Florida. Cathy then decided to make this an annual event.
Fast forward 23 years and it's become one of the largest annual outing/fundraiser at DCGC. On April 4th,2026, "Rally For The Cure" which is now open to both women AND men, 128, (ONE HUNDRED TWENTY EIGHT!)golfers, from 32 teams, raised a record amount of $8,886.32!!! Cathy has been the driving force behind this incredible event every single year until Rae Anne Swan, who was selected by Cathy, took over this year's event. Cathy said, "Rae Anne is a breast cancer survivor herself and who, year after year, always wanted to help in any way possible. I just felt she was a natural to hand over the reigns to Rae Anne and wow,did she take it and run with it." An event like this takes an incredible amount of planning and an army of volunteers who work tirelessly to make sure this is successful. Both couldn't thank everyone enough, "Without the volunteers we wouldn't be able to host it. They're that important!"
This year some new fundraising features and games were put into play along with Todd hitting drives for a donation on #10. It's a strict scramble and there were 3 flights. Over a dozen local and area clubs were involved as well, as they graciously donated rounds of golf for the raffle. There were numerous quality items to raffle off, along with a 50/50 drawing, a silent auction, and other creative items were used to help break the record. Everyone was given a thank you gift and
breakfast and lunch were provided. According to Rae Anne, "The staff and grounds crew deserve a huge "thank you " as they paint the course pink in so many creative ways which just heightens the awareness and energy level!"
The bottom line? Everyone is affected by cancer, especially breast cancer, but thanks to research, outreach initiatives, and programs they've helped to raise the survival rate to 90%. So, take a bow, Deep Creek Golf Club. Your dedication to this cause is not only playing host to this amazing event but more importantly, the amount raised is helping local and area Floridians beat breast cancer one round at a time!!! 👏👍👊⛳️💚🤍🩷(Please visit Deep Creek Rally For The Cure FB page for a photo album of this year's event!)
