There is nothing better than coming back to a warm camp.

Fires are lit, dinner is ready and another day of hunting is in the books. After a long day in the mountains there is something about seeing those tents glowing in the dark that just hits differently. This is camp life at Black Otter Guide Service and it is one of our favorite parts of the whole experience.

Our favorite time of year.

The pack string is loaded, the elk are bugling and fall is in the air. This is the season we spend all year working toward and there is nothing quite like being in the backcountry of Southwest Montana when it all comes together.

Mule Monday, brought to you by Thelma.

Look at that face! Thelma was so upset her ear was caught under the strap of her halter. There was quite a bit of pouting, to say the least, until we fixed it!

Some days in the backcountry are filled with chasing elk, and others are just about making sure everyone's ears are where they are supposed to be!

Meals during archery season are something special.

It is just warm enough to enjoy a meal or two outside and the mornings are cool but pleasant. A clean cook tent, meals prepped and ready, and a quiet camp with a table set for hunters coming back after a long day in the mountains. This is the part of camp life that does not always make it into the highlight reel but it is every bit as much a part of the Black Otter Guide Service experience as the ride in and the country itself. We are enjoying every one of these perfect fall days before the cold sets in.

Nika rode Sassy out from camp this year and we have a feeling Sassy was pretty happy about her job for the day!

She is just as charming with a rider on her back and a full pack string behind her as she is in the pack string.
