Tug Fest - Illinois

Tug Fest - Illinois The only tug-of-war across the Mississippi River! Port Byron, IL vs. LeClaire, IA! Thanks to Port Byron State Bank for lending the money to buy the first rope.

The Beginning - How this all got started

In 1987, Scott Verbeckmoes while in Michigan saw a similar but smaller event and thought it would be a good idea to have one in Port Byron, it was a hard sell for the people of Illinois and Iowa to get it off the ground, but these original committee members succeeded:

Co- Chairmans Keith Speckman and Chas. “Boots” Knapp
Denise Bowers
Kathy Augsbuger
Patty

Kemp
Connie Eckermann
Ciel Abbott
Fred & Lavern Walbusser
Frank and Sandy James

The original rope used up until its retirement in 2006 was purchased from Trever’s True Value, Port Byron, IL in 4 separate coils of 600’ each. Jerry Oppendike spliced the ropes together for the 2400 feet needed to cross the river. Don Johnson and Harry Cort from Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric put the rope on the reel and for several years helped put the rope across the river. Jerry Lancaster was the first announcer of the event. First Queen contest winner was Heidi Drummond. The first year was also still called Hobo days and the first tug was straight up Cherry Street from the docks. The Alabaster Eagle is a traveling trophy that was originally purchased by Betty and Boots Knapp from Kliems in Bettendorf, Iowa. Keith Speckman made the showcase the following year. These were the first, but the continued success is due to all of the volunteers who have come and gone over the years and a huge Thank you should be given to all who have participated in this great event.

🦚 Illinois Tug Fest Team Spotlight: Peacocks Tavern 🦚

There’s really only one way to put it… those boys are just built different. 💪😂

Peacocks Tavern showed up ready to pull and gave the Illinois side plenty to cheer about!

Big energy. Bigger pulls. Built different. 🦚💪

And yes, we’re reading the comments! These team spotlights aren’t meant to start any fights — we’re simply having some fun while recognizing our teams, sponsors, and all the hard work they put into Tug Fest each year.

We’re proud of our Illinois teams and want to show them off to our community! ❤️

💪 Illinois Tug Fest Team Spotlight: Black Fabrication 💪

You can tell these guys have been pulling together for a while — just watch those steps! 👀

Black Fabrication is a longtime Tug Fest team, and that experience shows. In sync, locked in, and moving as one when it matters most.

That kind of teamwork doesn’t happen overnight! 👏

💛 Illinois Tug Fest Team Shoutout: DeClercq Farms 💛

For DeClercq Farms, this pull means a little more. They’re pulling in memory of Millie DeClercq, who lost her battle with pediatric cancer in September 2025 at six months old. 🐮💛

Millie’s legacy lives on through The Millie Moo Foundation, (Hope On The Farm: The Millie Moo Story) a nonprofit born right here in our Port Byron community to support families facing pediatric cancer.

We’re proud to have DeClercq Farms representing the Illinois side of the rope!

Pull hard. Pull together. Pull for Millie. 💛

🏆 HOW HARD CAN IT BE? THE BOYS DO IT. 😏💪

Well… apparently the Tug Fest Illinois women make it look pretty easy. 😂

Our UNDEFEATED WOMEN’S TUG TEAM showed up, dug in, and reminded everyone that there’s some serious strength on the Illinois side of that rope. 💪🔥

And before the guys come for us — WE LOVE OUR MEN’S TEAMS. 😂 This one’s just for fun and a chance to give our ladies the spotlight they deserve!

Strong women. Strong team. Still undefeated. 🏆
