๐ŸŒŸ Teacher Feature: Mia Gitzes ๐ŸŒŸ

We're so excited to be welcoming Mia back to our teaching staff! โค๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ We missed her so much and couldn't be happier to have her back in the hot room sharing her energy, wisdom, and love for this practice with our community.

When did you first start practicing?
In 2010, I bought my first 3-month unlimited Groupon, but I didn't become a regular practitioner until around 2019.

How long have you been teaching?
Coming up on 5 years!

What's your favorite pose?
Floor Bow. While it can be uncomfortable, it feels amazing afterward. It's a posture that takes a lot of strength to access, and I always love a challenge.

When do you like to take class?
Either early in the morning or mid-to-late afternoon. Morning classes give me clarity for the rest of my day, while afternoon classes help me decompress and regulate my nervous system.

What's the most challenging part of your practice, and how do you overcome it?
Quieting my mind and remembering to find ease within my effort. I overcome both by slowing down and focusing on my breath.

Why do you keep practicing?
The community is number one, but also the patience and discipline this practice offers.

Who's your favorite musician?
Stevie Nicks... mostly because she's a witch. ๐Ÿ”ฎโœจ

What's your favorite restaurant in Philly?
Kalaya โ€” small plates and Asian food are two of my favorite things.

What other fitness routines do you enjoy besides yoga?
Biking, hiking, swimmingโ€”anything active and outdoors. I also love viewing and creating art because there's nothing more beautiful than peering into someone's soul through their art.

What advice do you have for new students?
Just keep coming. It may feel strange at first, but that feeling fades. Sometimes the most challenging things lead to the greatest growth. Check your embarrassment at the doorโ€”there's no room for that in the hot room. And ultimately, love yourself. If you can't today, try faking it until you do. โค๏ธ

Dan is our in-house spiritual advisor ๐Ÿ•‰๏ธ and one of the coolest and most compassionate teachers that's ever graced HYP. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ”ฅ When did you first start practicing?
In 2011, a friend recommended me to paint signage at the studio and I was given a class card. I put it off for a few months, but once I gave it a shot, I was immediately hooked. I've been steady ever since.

๐Ÿ”ฅ How long have you been teaching?
This summer will be 7 years. I still can't believe I'm a teacher at this special place that did so much for me. I see it as a service to others and truly believe in this practice.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Favorite poses?
Standing Separate Leg Forehead to Knee and Half Tortoise. The attraction for both is breathing into the back of the body.

๐Ÿ”ฅ When do you like to come to class?
When I can get there! ๐Ÿ˜„ Usually 4:00pm, but I like dealing with the version of myself I brought to class that day.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Most challenging part of your practice?
That same version of myselfโ€”physically, mentally, emotionally.

๐Ÿ”ฅ How do you overcome it?
Think of the alternative: not coming.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Why do you keep practicing?
For the people around me. In class, on the street, in my relationships, and people I don't even know yet. I'm a better version of myself because of yoga.

๐ŸŽต Favorite musicians?
Kurt Heasley (Lilys), Aphex Twin, Siouxsie Sioux, Jah Shaka, and Steve Gunn.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Favorite restaurant in Philly?
As a Hare Krishna devotee, I avoid restaurants, but the kitchen at Radha Krishna Temple in Mt. Airy is always there for me.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธ Other fitness routines?
Walking in Wissahickon Park and cycling to and from work.

"You have taken a very big and fearless step by deciding to come to a hot yoga class and you should be proud of that. Work hard, but go easy on yourself. You're on your way to something very special. This could be the first day of the rest of your life, and I'm so excited for you!"

These two have been bringing consistency, focus, and great energy to the HYP community for years ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Favorite poses?
Mary loves ๐Ÿช Camel & ๐Ÿ‡ Rabbit โ€” the perfect pose/counterpose combo.
Markโ€™s favorites are ๐Ÿ”บ Trikonasana, Standing Head to Knee, & Locust Pose ๐Ÿ’ช

Favorite class times?
Definitely the 4pmโ€ฆ and somehow also 6:30am on their birthdays ๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸŽ‰

Most challenging parts of their practice?
Mary says learning patience with progress.
Mark says Half Moon & Awkward Pose due to a past injury.

How do they work through it?
โœจ Focus. Discipline. Patience.
Mary reframes challenges as part of the process and listens to what her body can do each day.
Mark focuses on letting difficult thoughts pass and trusting the instructors to guide him through the next pose.

Why do they keep practicing?
