You become what you repeatedly do… and what you repeatedly say to yourself. 🧠⤵️

After 15+ years of coaching female athletes, we know developing a catcher can’t stop with what she does physically behind the plate.

Because the pressure she carries doesn’t disappear when practice ends.

She’s navigating expectations about how she should perform, how she should look, how she should act, how she should fit in...

while ALSO learning how to compete, fail, lead, handle pressure + believe in herself.

That’s a lot for a young athlete to learn how to manage.
And it’s exactly why the MIND has always been such an important part of how we develop our catchers.

Our goal has always been to develop Confident Commanders™ behind the plate.

Catchers who are physically prepared.
 Situationally savvy.
 Mentally strong.
 Confident enough to lead.

But here’s the thing...

She won’t spend her whole life wearing catching gear.

When she walks off the field, she’s still HER.

There comes a point in every catcher’s development where knowing HOW to do the skill isn’t enough anymore. 👀🥎

She can have a beautiful block.

A quick transfer.

Strong receiving mechanics.

A great throw-down.

But the game doesn’t happen in perfectly controlled reps.

She’s processing the count, the hitter, the runners, her pitcher, the defense + the situation... all while being expected to execute.

And THAT is why we believe catcher development has to go so much further than physical mechanics.

We want her learning to:

→ Make decisions under pressure
→ Understand hitters + pitch calling
→ Manage her pitcher

Your catcher is going to fail A LOT in this game.

She touches the ball on every pitch. She makes decisions in real time. Her mistakes are visible and there will be moments when she falls short, receives criticism, or doesn’t achieve the result she worked so hard for.

But that result does not get to decide what she is capable of becoming.

One of the most important mindset strategies we teach our catchers is to use their results as feedback—not as evidence of failure.

And this week, I had to use that exact strategy myself.

For the first time in 15 years of coaching, I received a one-star review. OOOF… I’m not going to lie. It stung. 😮‍💨

It would have been easy to let that one person’s experience overshadow everything we’ve worked to build over the past decade and a half or to use it as evidence that I was failing.

Instead, I had to separate the facts from the story my brain wanted to create, have my own back without needing anyone else to prove I was right, and decide how I could use the experience to become better.

Because “I haven’t achieved it” does not mean “I never will.”

Sometimes, it simply means:

I haven’t achieved it YET.
