Mexican Native American is an identity that unifies us with the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.

In English, when we say “Native American,” we are using it in a continental sense. Anthropologists, historians, and scholars have long used the term to describe Indigenous peoples across the Americas, not only tribes within the present-day United States.

We avoid using the word “Indigenous” alone because it is often perceived as referring only to “Indigenous Mexicans,” separating us from the rest of our continent. “Native American” makes it clear that we are Indigenous to the Americas as a whole.

We are not all Mexica.

She is Lakota Native American.
He is Purépecha Native American.
They are Yaqui Native American.
You are Apache Native American.
I am Mexica (Meh-shee-cah) Native American.

We have Indigenous ancestry. In the English language, we are Native Americans.
