Doug Miller went 2-1 on the day at IBJJF Master Worlds in Vegas.

Doug’s run ended in the quarterfinals in a questionable one. He hit a beautiful takedown (lat drop) near the edge of the mat, but was awarded only an advantage after they went out of bounds.

Regardless of the call, Doug put together a great showing on one of the biggest stages in the sport and once again showed how much his game continues to develop.

Now his sights are set on a handful of super fights and then IBJJF No-Gi Worlds in December.

Next Saturday, we’ll be awarding Doug his purple belt.

The ceremony will take place at 11:15am in lieu of BJJ fundamentals before we roll into open mat at noon.

Come pack the mats and help us welcome Doug to purple belt!

Doug Miller has arrived. Tune in on FloGrappling for his first match on Mat 2 at 4:47pm (ET). 🏅

NEXT MATCHUP: WOOLSON vs. DERBY

210 LB BLUE BELT | NO-GI SUBMISSION ONLY

This one has all the makings of an absolute war. Two relentless, high-paced grapplers who are going to push the action from the jump.

Jake Woolson | Oswego Jiu Jitsu
One of OJJ’s own. Jake is a 2015 NYS Division II Wrestling Champion, 2026 IBJJF Atlanta Open silver medalist, and 2025 Grappling Industries absolute silver medalist. His wrestling pedigree, pressure, and nonstop pace make him a problem for anyone standing across from him.

Cam Derby | Roots Combat Academy
A military veteran who has been competing since 2023, Cam is a blue belt who thrives in fast-paced environments. He brings a fast, violent, technical style and isn’t coming to Oswego to slow things down.

These two are built to clash. Expect heavy wrestling, constant pressure, scrambles, and two guys hunting for the finish.

Woolson vs. Derby. This one is gonna be savage🔥

Congrats to Kris and Jake, who earned their blue belts tonight after standout performances this past Saturday at Grappling Industries Syracuse.

These two are perfect examples of what happens when you actually take advantage of the opportunities in front of you and just train.

Kris has been with us for two years next month. AKA Grandpa 😂 This dude is out here dropping age divisions just to get matches and still finding his way onto the podium against guys 20 years younger than him. He keeps showing up, keeps competing, and keeps getting better.

Jake has become an integral part of what we do at OJJ, including our OPD program. He regularly trains twice a day and will stay for 2–3 classes in a single evening. He’ll work a 12-hour shift and still come straight to the gym and kick ass.

That’s how you accelerate your development.

We offer a lot of classes for a reason. Take advantage of them. Get in the room. Get the extra rounds. Stay for another class. Invest in yourself. Kris and Jake have done exactly that, and you can see the results.

When I asked Jake for some words of wisdom tonight, his answer was basically: just keep showing up and train. No bu****it. No “I’m too tired.”

Pretty damn good advice.

What I love most is that these guys genuinely love to train. They’ve invested a ton into themselves and earned every bit of these blue belts.

Congrats to both of you. Well earned 👏

Now I’m looking forward to watching Grandpa hunt for even more matches at blue belt… and watching Jake continue developing that incredibly annoying guard game 😂

Back to work!

🚨 MATCHUP UPDATE: HOGAN vs. HIGGINS 🚨

185 LB BLUE BELT | NO-GI SUBMISSION ONLY

Cody’s original opponent, John Bless, has been called to active-duty military deployment and will no longer be able to compete. We want to wish John a safe deployment and thank him for his service 🇺🇸

Stepping up in his place is fellow law enforcement officer Ryan Higgins of Ultimate Athletics.

Cody Hogan | Oswego Jiu Jitsu
Since returning to competition in 2023, Cody has racked up 23 victories with 16 submissions across IBJJF, FUJI, and Grappling Industries. Now he makes his superfight debut looking to put on a show in front of the hometown crowd and hunt for Submission of the Night.

Ryan Higgins | Ultimate Athletics
A proven 170-pound competitor over the last several years, Higgins is moving up a weight class for this matchup and stepping into his first superfight. He’s coming to Oswego looking to spoil the hometown party and leave with the win.

Two law enforcement officers. Two experienced competitors. One submission-only showdown.

A special promotion night at OJJ.

One of my favorite parts of coaching is getting to recognize people who have put in the work and earned that next step. Tonight, we got to do a lot of that.

Abby, Brad, and Lydia — Promoted to Grey Belt

All three had standout performances at Grappling Industries Syracuse this weekend, but these promotions are about much more than one tournament. I’ve watched each of them grow tremendously in the room, and this weekend was an opportunity for them to show just how far they’ve come.

I’m incredibly proud of all three of them. Grey belts well earned.

Cristian, Kevin, and Shirley — Promoted to Blue Belt

Cristian finished his time at white belt by winning his bracket Saturday. He’s put a ton of work into his game, and it showed.

Kevin continues to be someone who will take on whatever challenge is put in front of him. Saturday, that meant dropping into the adult division AND moving up a weight class just to get matches. He still battled his way to 3rd in a tough bracket. That says a lot about him.

Shirley proved she was ready at the IBJJF NY Summer Open last month. She’s been consistently putting in extra work, improving, competing, and pushing herself. This one was earned.

We also handed out a bunch of long-overdue stripes tonight. I wish I could highlight every single one, because there are so many people in our room right now making huge improvements.

As a coach, that’s the part I’m most proud of. Medals are awesome. Winning is awesome. But watching our students consistently show up, challenge themselves, support their teammates, compete, learn from losses, and come back better is what this is really about.

We’ll have more promotions when we get back from Vegas and following the OJJ Invitational on October 24th.

Congratulations to everyone who was recognized tonight. I’m proud of you all, and I’m proud of what we’re building together at OJJ.

Another day at the office for OJJ at Grappling Industries Syracuse.

A lot of breakthrough moments yesterday, techniques we’ve been working on showing up in competition, and our athletes carrying themselves with class regardless of the outcome. Despite witnessing some pretty terrible reffing 😂, our coaches had a great time coaching all of our hardworking kids and adults. Everyone competed with a ton of heart, and it’s awesome seeing the progress being made every time we step onto the competition mats.

I love seeing everyone use competition as a way to test their skill set and measure their progress. There are always takeaways and things to bring back to the training room, but overall, we had some incredible performances yesterday.

Most of all, I’m proud of the culture we’ve created at OJJ. It showed yesterday with Team Ben Tallini taking:

🥇 1st Place — Kids
🥈 2nd Place — Adults

Proud of everyone who stepped out there and represented.

See everyone back in class tomorrow. We have a few promotions to take care of… 🤪👀

Happy Takedown Thursday! 🤼

Normally we teach you how to take people down.

But if you don’t train at OJJ, you’re probably the one getting taken down.

So here’s a sweep instead 😂

De La Riva → Short X → bump sweep.

Shoutout Nicholas Walters for showing me this slick Short X entry 🤝
