🐴🌱 NUNDA RANCH — FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🌱🐴
Did you know that horses are naturally designed to spend 12–16 hours a day grazing? 🌾
Grazing isn’t just about filling their bellies. It’s an essential part of a horse’s physical health, digestive function, and mental well-being!
🌿 Why is grazing so important for horses?
🐴 Digestive Health: Horses have relatively small stomachs and digestive systems designed for frequent intake of forage. Consistent access to forage helps support healthy digestion and gut function.
💚 Stomach Ulcer Prevention: Horses continuously produce stomach acid, even when they aren’t eating! Frequent grazing encourages saliva production, which helps buffer stomach acid and can reduce the risk of gastric ulcers.
🌾 Mental Well-Being: Grazing is a natural behavior that keeps horses occupied and mentally stimulated. Allowing horses to forage throughout the day can help reduce boredom, stress, and unwanted behaviors.
🐎 Natural Movement: When horses graze, they’re constantly taking small steps as they search for their next bite. This gentle movement supports healthy circulation, mobility, and overall physical well-being.
🌻 Social Interaction: Horses are herd animals! Grazing together allows them to socialize, strengthen herd relationships, and engage in natural behaviors.
💡 Another fun fact!
Unlike humans, horses don’t have a gallbladder! Their digestive systems are adapted to process small, frequent amounts of forage rather than a few large meals.
❤️ Here at Nunda Ranch, we believe that happy, healthy horses start with understanding their natural needs!
While pasture grazing isn’t always possible year-round, providing consistent access to quality hay or other appropriate forage helps support their digestive health and overall happiness.
Remember, lush pasture isn’t suitable for every horse. Easy keepers and horses prone to laminitis may require carefully managed grazing.
🌿 Happy horses, healthy horses, happy trails! 🐴
