“There is only one instance of Raynor’s work in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts: Dedham Country and Polo Club. Donald Ross, ironically a naysayer of the template concept, had already built nine holes on the property in 1915. In 1920, seeking to add an additional nine, the club passed over Ross in favor of Herbert Fowler, right around the time that Fowler was building his magnum opus, Eastward Ho!

Ross, embittered by the slight, wrote to a friend in 1923, “Instead of giving me a chance they hired him and it was published in all of the Boston papers that Fowler was the world’s greatest expert. His work proved to be an absolute failure, not only at Dedham, but also on every other job where he worked. Now they want me to take up where he left off, and if I succeed in doing anything with it, Fowler, not I, will get the credit.”

Ross declined the project and Raynor was hired to stitch together the preexisting Ross holes and the unfinished Fowler holes. Raynor saved a good portion of the Ross greens, while rerouting many of his holes, which sit on the clubhouse side of Country Club Road. Raynor left his own unmistakable stamp, that of the template holes, on what are now holes 6 through 15, as well as the Reverse Redan 17th.

With relatively recent restoration work from Brian Silva, Raynor’s templates are now firmly on display at Dedham.”

"Just about half of the sides completed their rounds on Tuesday, with the rest of the field, or whichever competitors were able to call out of work for a second consecutive day, returned on Wednesday morning to vie for one of three spots at Erin Hills and Blue Mound CC next May."

Our Massachusetts Senior Amateur champ advances by sinking this birdie putt on the 19th hole in his second match of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.

He’s currently 2-up over Dan Sullivan thru 9 of his Round of 16 match.

Sankaty Head Golf Club, in Siasconset, Mass., has been chosen by the USGA as the host site for the 2036 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur.

Hester Advances to Round of 32 ⛳

Earlier today, reigning Massachusetts Senior Amateur Champion, Brendan Hester, won his Round of 64 match at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.

Next Up: Hester's Round of 32 match is scheduled for 9:20 a.m. Tuesday.

On Monday, Massachusetts Amateur Champion, Aidan Emmerich teamed up with his brother Christian at 2027 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Qualifying. Thanks to a thrilling birdie-eagle finish, the two advanced.

All smiles at the top of the leaderboard at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship. Shannon Johnson (Thorny Lea GC) is tied for the lead after one round of play. Meanwhile, this year’s Ouimet Memorial Tournament Champion, Alexis Florio (Woodland GC) is T5.

Round 2 will get going Sunday morning. Match play scheduled to begin Monday morning.
