"Leave it to Wayne Stiles, the master of the floating putting surface, to turn the bottom of a storm drain into a memorable golf experience. Brookline’s greens sit hidden on grassy shelves (see the drive-and-pitch 4th), perched atop rock pinnacles (if you thought 7 was steep, just wait for 11), carved into amphitheaters (the drop-shot 12th plays into a stone quarry), and tucked inside forested glades (the no. 1 handicap 14th drags you halfway to the Arnold Arboretum).

Brookline also boasts one of the only public driving ranges close to the city; a large, convenient, and reasonably sloped practice green (by no means a given at local publics); and a food-and-beverage operation that sets it apart. Plus, the rates are affordable, and the welcome is always first-class.

The municipal golf model seldom leaves room in the budget for large-scale infrastructural changes, and as Lawson walks the property, pointing out the intricacies of the developing drainage project, you can sense his gratitude for the opportunities afforded by The Country Club and its ties to the USGA. This project is the first step in a massive, newly approved master plan–a plan with roots stretching back to the 2022 U.S. Open."

Joe Peters, of Wi******er Country Club, has earned this year's Andrew J. Blau Volunteer of the Year Award.

Peters has served as captain of the Greater Boston/North Shore region since 2024, and in that time, he has developed new tools, produced training videos, and helped streamline a process that requires precision and consistency across hundreds of golf course tee sets.

George Thompson of Meadow Brook Country Club in Reading is the 2021 Mass Golf Volunteer of the Year Award for his service as a course rater.

“Over the past two-plus decades, there’s been no team hotter than Team Massachusetts. That heat wave continued into this year as Massachusetts was victorious once again, with a final tally of Massachusetts 77, Connecticut 67 1/2, Rhode Island 47 1/2.
