At TET 68 some of you were asking about what I meant by saying the Vietnam war changed dramatically.
We know the NVA used tanks in limited scope during the Tet Offensive. Mostly PT-76 amphibious light tanks. In 1968….
By the Easter offensive of 1972? They were using not only PT-76s but T-54s. And full on tank battles are being waged against ARVN M-48 Patton tanks.
This was a far cry from the VC insurgency of the mid 60s. It was full out conventional warfare.
The NVA strength for the Eastet offensive was
300,000 NVA Infantry
322 Tanks and APCs
(To put this into perspective 300,000 Chinese soldiers crossed the Yalu river in the Korean war)
Ultimately it was American air power and Naval bombardment that had saved the day and allowed South Vietnam another 3 years of freedom.
