Ask most job seekers to describe themselves and you’ll hear a job title and a list of skills.

Ask them who they actually are and it often goes quiet.

That matters, because skills get you into the room, and everyone else in that room has them too. What sets you apart is where your skills meet your personality. With LinkedIn handing us a new template for who to be every other week, it’s easy to lose track of that.

On this week’s Careering with Cameron podcast, I sat down with Perpetua Neo, known to her clients as Dr P. She coaches people across six continents to work out who they are, so they can walk into interviews and new roles without pretending.

What stayed with me:

→ Struggling to name your strengths? Ask the people who know you best, and take their answers seriously, even the ones that surprise you.
→ Get to know your weak spots too. That isn’t about beating yourself up. It’s about seeing where your strengths make up for them, and where a teammate fills the gap.
→ Look back at a challenge you worked through. How you handled it says more about your grit than any list of skills.
→ Growing into something is different from faking it. Becoming a bit more outgoing is growth. Pretending to love things you can’t stand is just tiring.

A job goes live in the morning.

By lunchtime, hundreds of people have applied, and some of them never even read the ad.

That’s the reality now that AI tools can apply to dozens of jobs for someone in a single click. If you turn up a few days later, there’s a real chance nobody ever opens your application.

So the answer isn’t applying harder. It’s spending more of your time being found, and being ready when the interview comes.

On this week’s Careering with Cameron podcast, I sat down with Ben White, MBA, who has spent 16 years in recruitment, both at agencies and inside Fortune 500 companies.

He has seen hiring from every angle, and he shared exactly how he’d prepare if he were job searching today.

What stayed with me:

→ A few minutes with AI before an interview can show you the questions that company tends to ask.

→ Walk in with a couple of stories ready from every role you’ve held, so you’re never searching for an example on the spot.

→ The most qualified person often isn’t the one hired. The person they connected with is.

Your resume doesn’t mention AI.

You might think that’s neutral.

A hiring manager may read it as a sign you’re avoiding it.

When I review resumes and LinkedIn profiles, AI is one of the first things I look for, whatever field you’re in.

On this week’s Careering with Cameron podcast, I sat down with my good friend Colleen DiFabio, founder of Bi3 Careers.

Colleen has spent 25 years connecting talented people with the companies that need them, and she sees the same thing from the hiring side.

Here’s what she told me:

→ Naming the tools you’ve used won’t get you far. She wants to hear how AI helped you make a process faster or smarter.
→ It’s never too late to start. The most senior person on her team went all in for almost a full day, and he now advises clients on AI strategy.
→ If you’re weighing up consulting after a layoff, the same applies. Clients expect consultants to arrive already confident with AI.

You've sent 200 applications and heard back from three.

No wonder you're starting to doubt yourself.

But the grads who break through aren't applying to everything. They believe in what they bring, and they get properly curious about the few companies they'd love to join.

On this week's Careering with Cameron podcast, I spoke with Shelley Maley, PHR, CCSP, founder of Dreamcatcher Career Coaching, LLC.

Shelley spent eight years coaching students in higher education and now helps new grads and interns get noticed.

When the replies don't come, it's easy to let your mind run away with it, and that frustration can creep into every conversation.

Shelley helps grads keep their belief in themselves, because the right conversation with the right person still opens doors.

Then there's the outside work. Get curious about the companies you'd actually love to work for.

Learn what they do, and reach out to them directly. That way you're a person they remember, not just another name on a pile.

Parents, pass this to your student. Students, send it to your friend!

There's a question most people never get asked at the start of their career.
Not what job do you want.

Not what did you study.

But what has always made you come alive when you're doing it?

I sat down with Michelle Schafer on the Careering with Cameron podcast this week and that question sat at the heart of everything we talked about.

Michelle is a career coach and author with over a decade of helping people find work that genuinely fits!

She's seen what happens when people don’t ask themselves this question.

They take whatever comes, one step leads to another, and years later they realise they've never once felt lit up by any of it.

The conversation also got into something that doesn't get said enough to people early on. Your first boss shapes more than your first job.

Worth sharing with someone who's just starting out.

If you're in a job search right now, AI is already part of the process whether you're using it or not.

It's screening your application before a human sees it.

It's what your competition is using to apply at a scale and speed that wasn't possible two years ago.

And it's behind the rejection emails that arrive before you've finished your morning coffee.

I sat down with Patrick Callahan from Keel3 on the Careering with Cameron podcast this week to get a realistic picture of what's actually happening from someone who has been inside this world for a long time.

The conversation covered how to get started with AI without the overwhelm, what you should never put into a public tool when you're job searching, and the bigger question of what genuinely makes a candidate stand out when AI is levelling the playing field for everyone else.

Well worth a listen if you've been wondering where you actually fit in all of this.

Most people treat a job rejection like a final answer.

They feel the sting, close the laptop, and move on.

The company never hears from them again.

But what if the rejection wasn't actually final?

What if the person who sent it had never seen your application?

What if the role wasn't as closed as the email made it sound?

In this solo episode of the Careering with Cameron podcast I walk through why responding after a rejection, thoughtfully, genuinely, without desperation, puts you in a category almost no other candidate reaches.

The way you handle a no often tells a company more about you than how you handled everything before it.

Your first paycheck comes with a lot of decisions nobody prepares you for.

I sat down with financial advisor Todd Roselle on the Careering with Cameron podcast this week and we went through the decisions that feel minor at the start but turn out to matter more than almost anything else that follows.

What your first paycheck actually needs to do.

Why the way you save in your twenties changes everything about your options later.

And a point Todd made about career progression that has nothing to do with money but everything to do with how quickly people move.

Worth sharing with anyone at the start of their careers.

Last week, six people working with Talent Connect receive job offers.

Only one applied through a traditional job posting.

The other five networked their way in

Through direct relationships, warm introductions, and conversations with companies that weren't even hiring yet.

In this solo episode of the Careering with Cameron podcast I break down how that happened, why applying online alone is working against you, and the three shifts that actually move the needle right now.

I also get into the mental side of being ghosted and why silence from a stranger has no business deciding how you feel about yourself or your search.

Most people who feel stuck at work assume the answer is out there somewhere.

A new job.

A new company.

A fresh start.

But what if the thing blocking you has nothing to do with any of that?

I sat down with Mark Vandeneijnde from BEING at Full Potential on the Careering with Cameron podcast this week and he made a really great distinction.

There's a difference between feeling depressed about your situation and recognising that something is blocked.

One puts the problem somewhere you can't reach.

The other puts it somewhere you can actually do something about.

We also got into why the rise of AI is going to demand more of what makes us human, not less.

And he mentioned a free assessment worth taking if you've been feeling like something's off but can't quite name what it is.
