SpikeBoarding
Of first and foremost importance, SpikeBoarding is a TRANSPORT SPORT. The skills acquired during the recreation and racing of SpikeBoarding are directly transferable skills that may be used in daily commuting world wide. We Train-We Commute / We Race-We Commute. We, Become The Motor. SpikeBoarding along with Bicycling, Stand Up Paddle, Switch Kick Longboarding, Foot Biking, Nordic Skiing, Roller Skiing, Inline Skating are all fundamental to a healthy society. TRANSPORT SPORT today. TRANSPORT SPORT tomorrow. TRANSPORT SPORT heals the planet.
SpikeBoarding is influenced in two equal parts by the sports of Nordic Skiing and Switch Kick Longboarding. Those two melded into one with a meditative end towards motoring forward, on flats, uphills, downhills and with as much efficiency as the full body can generate. These two endurance sports or transport sports blended, become SpikeBoarding. Both high performance or casual tempo commuting may be practiced. Terrain selection will dictate the workout or commuting speed. Effective stroke is the ultimate goal. Same as all endurance sports. One hundred elite swimmers will all be striving for the same "best", most efficient, stroke, wasting as little energy as possible. Nordic skiers are the same. SpikeBoarding is no different. "How slow can you go?", is the order of the day. You can only go fast when you can go slow, with perfect form. Words to live by. Like any finely tuned and strengthened stroke the beginner will have success in ex*****on slowly and their mastery becomes stable within 6 months, proficient in 1 to 3 years, expert in 4 to 6 years and Olympic class in 10 years time. The body adapts to the load, slowly and with dedicated practice. Nordic skiing experts will all tell you. Ten thousand hours makes a perfect Nordic skier.
SpikeBoarding uses two specialized items of sporting gear. They are, a longboard skateboard specially designed for effective switch kicking or a SpikeBoard and a SkateBoard Spike®. The board is super stable, descending as well as while on one leg. It has safety fenders to keep your feet off the wheels and your spike out of the wheel wells. Fenders also keep the elements under the board and off your legs. These "SpikeBoards" are drop deck boards, 3 inches of drop, with long stand over lengths, 39 ". They have 85 mm wheels, 180 mm trucks. We see a time in the not to distant future when reliable hand brakes will be standard on all SpikeBoards for use at any speed, down any hill reliably.
The SkateBoard Spike is a device very similar to a Nordic Ski pole with one glaring difference. It can be used to spike with one hand alone while switch kicking ( a move called CXC or Cubi-X-Cross) as well as with two hands simultaneously to Stand Up Spike or SUS. The Shaft is over sized in comparison to a ski pole. It is fabricated to weigh as little as possible and made of carbon fiber. It weights 19 oz. It has a traditional carbide steel spike footing, same as Nordic Roller Ski Poles have had for the last 30 years. The handle is uniquely designed made to be spiked down upon by the palm, there by allowing for one hand to grasp the shaft while the other spikes down, one hand over the next (STACKED HANDS) and completes the Stand Up Spike stroke. The handle's core center is solid, ultra light, resin. The exterior is an optimized foam with the perfect stiffness and flex. The footing is easily replaced using boiling water and a hot glue gun for reapplication. Spike tip life span varies 500-1000 hours. The spike requires a 90 second sharpening with a Diamond Hand File before each serious work out or every few days of local commuting.
