🦄 Behind the myth of a unicorn startup is .
👉 But burning out doesn’t have to be your destiny, when you are wizened to a few truths.
Here’s what went down in today:
🤨 “Why keep going?” I asked my client, an executive at a fast-paced AI startup going through growing pains.
😩 She was telling me how unmotivated, tired, and emotionally drained she felt from the extreme grind that led to millions of dollars in funding,
… Only to be met with the need to raise even more money and now the added insult of personal attacks from the CEO.
😤
But she’s tough and undeterred.
🥅 She thought she’d feel more certain she can raise money for her future startup, IF she achieved the next goal of raising tens of millions at her current company.
She was fixated on the goal, working late, and feeling very stressed.
Here’s what I offered her:
1️⃣ The feeling of accomplishment will last 15 minutes, just a moment. Then it will be back to the grind with even bigger goals to achieve.
✨ “That’s when I’ll burn out for sure,” she said.
2️⃣ What if she can raise $100 million for the company she runs in the future, regardless of what happens here?
✨ “Yes, that’s possible,” she said.
🛬 Here’s where we landed:
1️⃣ She can have confidence now, not later, by choosing to see herself as capable — as someone who’s an equal and a thought partner to other executives, investors, and the board.
2️⃣ This doesn’t mean she quits or does a shoddy job, but instead fuels her actions — not with the exhaust of — but with the clean fuel of self-assurance.
At the end of the session, my client looked as though a thousand pound weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
She felt ready and capable, clear and certain of her next steps.
This is possible for you, too.
