Skip Sams is the Founder and Head Coach of The Creative Purpose Project.

Mission

I help empower musicians and performing artists in recovery who struggle with being creative without the use of mind-altering substances by reclaiming and expanding their technical skills; restoring connection to a higher source of creativity and reigniting their spark to light up the whole world again. He is an award-winning composer, performer, and multimedia producer. Skip is also a co

ach for musicians and artists and is certified by the esteemed International Coach Federation (ICF). Skip has over 16 years of recovery from crystal meth, alcoholism, and bipolar disorder. In 2004, he was diagnosed with HIV. For over a decade, Skip has been defying these diagnoses and helping musicians and performing artists who have lost their technical skills, disconnected from their inner music, and whose spark of creativity has gone dark. His mission is to help 10,000 musicians share their light and hope of recovery through 10,000 recordings and 10,000 performances by 2030. Skip last smoked a joint on April 19th, 2006, making his sobriety date 4/20.

It’s the New Year. You have so many wonderful ideas — changes to make, projects to complete, goals to achieve.

And somehow, instead of clarity, it becomes overwhelming.
Not because you’re unmotivated.

But because everything feels possible — and choosing one direction feels risky.

When everything feels possible, clarity doesn’t come from thinking harder — it comes from choosing.

That’s why I’m hosting a live, 3-hour Zoom workshop this Saturday:
Choose a Clear Direction for 2026
Align your goals with who you’re becoming — without overthinking or regret.

This isn’t about setting more goals or pushing yourself harder.
It’s about making a clear choice about who you’re becoming — and letting that choice guide the creative decisions you make in your life, your work, and your art.

If you’re ready to stop circling and start moving with clarity, you’re invited.

Too many ideas… and still no motion?
One of the most common places I see creative people get stuck (myself included) isn’t a lack of ideas.
It’s having too many.

So many possibilities. So many directions. So many things you could do—each one carrying the hope that this might finally be the one that changes everything.

And that’s usually where the freeze begins.
Instead of starting, we try to decide.
Instead of moving, we look for clarity.
Instead of action, we wait for certainty.

But often, that decision-making process quietly becomes the distraction.

Underneath it isn’t strategy—it’s fear.
Fear of choosing the wrong thing.
Fear that if this doesn’t work… maybe nothing will.

So the thought creeps in:
This has to be the one that changes everything.
And then—nothing starts.

And if nothing starts, nothing gets finished.

Here’s the reframe that keeps saving me:
When you allow yourself to do som**hing simply for the sake of doing it—even imperfectly—you create learning, growth, and momentum. Not because you got it right… but because you stayed in motion.

Motion builds momentum.

The question then becomes:
How can I afford not to do the thing at all?
Because progress doesn’t come from picking the perfect idea.
It comes from choosing one—and letting the process teach you what’s next.

If this resonates, you might want to save Saturday, January 3.
I’ll be hosting a workshop to help get clear on what actually deserves your focus in 2026—details coming soon.

Courageously Creative,
Skip
