One of the greatest challenges every athlete will face isn't physical…
It's learning how to handle the days when things don't go their way.
World-renowned sports psychologist Allistair McCaw shared a powerful message to young athletes and parents: you are not going to perform at your best every time you compete. In fact, you won't even win every time you perform well. That's sports.
Too many athletes judge themselves based solely on results. They expect perfection and become frustrated when they don't bowl "their way" every time. The truth is, that's impossible.
Growth comes from learning how to respond when you don't have your best stuff.
Can you stay positive after a bad break?
Can you trust your process after a poor game?
Can you continue competing with confidence when things aren't perfect?
The best athletes aren't the ones who never struggle. They're the ones who learn to handle adversity, manage expectations, and keep showing up with a great attitude.
As coaches, and especially as parents, we need to remember that development is a long journey. There will be highs and lows, success and failure, great days and frustrating days.
Those experiences are not obstacles to growth.
They are growth.
Expect the best from yourself. Give your best effort. But understand that perfection doesn't exist, and your value as an athlete is not determined by one game, one tournament, or one season.
Trust the process. Learn from the setbacks. Keep moving forward.
Train. Practice. Improve.
