Recovery becomes more important as we get older, but that doesn’t mean we need to stop challenging ourselves.

We still want to lift weights.

Build muscle.

Challenge our heart.

Train power.

And continue doing hard things.

But here’s the thing: the workout is only part of the equation.

Sleep matters.
Nutrition matters.
Stress matters.
Movement matters.

And you definitely don’t need to be sore after every workout for it to have worked.

The goal isn’t to see how exhausted or sore we can make you.

The goal is to challenge your body enough that it has a reason to adapt, recover, and then come back and do it again.

Because we’re not trying to win one workout.

We’re trying to keep you training for years.

Swipe through for 5 things that can help you recover better after 40. ➡️

Train hard enough to create change. Recover well enough to do it again. 💪

If your knees bother you when you squat, it doesn’t automatically mean you need to stop squatting.

Sometimes a few simple changes can make the movement feel a whole lot better.

Here are 3 things we like to try:

1️⃣ Take off your running shoes.
Running shoes are designed for running, not necessarily strength training. The cushioning and shape of the shoe can change how you interact with the floor.

We’ve had plenty of people take their shoes off, squat again, and immediately say, “That feels so much better.”

2️⃣ Open up your hips.
If your hips are feeling tight, spend about 30 seconds per side in the seated hip stretch I show in the video, then try your squat again.

3️⃣ Work on your ankle mobility.
Get into a half kneeling position and gently drive your knee forward over your toes while keeping your foot down. Rock forward and back for about 30 seconds, then retest your squat.

The important part is the retest.

Try your squat.

Make one or two changes.

Then squat again and see what your body tells you.

These aren’t going to solve every cause of knee pain, but sometimes the answer isn’t to completely avoid the movement.

Sometimes we just need to find a way to make the movement work better for you. 💪

Today marks 14 years of Beyond Measure.

Looking back, I honestly don’t know how we made it sometimes.

When we opened, we were young, inexperienced, and had no idea what it actually took to run a business. There were years of incredibly long days, plenty of mistakes, difficult seasons, and a whole lot of figuring things out as we went.

But there was one thing we had from the very beginning:

We cared about people.

We wanted to help. We wanted to serve. And I think when we didn’t have much else figured out, people could feel that.

I also know without a doubt that none of this happens without Kate.

She believed in this crazy idea enough to leave her job, nanny three days a week and volunteer here the other four just so we could make it work. Her sacrifice, belief in what we were building, and everything she has brought to Beyond Measure since then are a huge part of why we’re still here today.

And then there are all of you.

Every current member. Every past member. Every coach and team member. Every person who referred a friend, shared a post, left a review, encouraged us, or trusted us enough to walk through our doors.

Thank you.

Running this business has been one of the hardest things we’ve ever done, but it has also given us relationships, experiences and memories that we will carry with us forever.

Fourteen years later, we’ve learned a lot. We’ve changed a lot. And we still have plenty to learn.

But the thing that got us through those early years is the same thing that will continue to guide us moving forward:

Care about people. Help people. Serve people.

That’s never going to change.

Happy 14th birthday, Beyond Measure. ❤️

And thank you to everyone who helped us get here

We were thinking about golf recently, and we realized there’s a pretty good lesson in it when it comes to our health.

You can hit a 300 yard drive and then tap in a 6-inch putt.

They feel completely different.

But they both go on the scorecard.

Health and fitness can be similar.

Maybe strength training is your driver. You love it. You enjoy coming to the gym, lifting weights and getting stronger.

But you still have other clubs in the bag.

Cardio. Nutrition. Sleep. Recovery.

And sometimes the thing holding us back isn't that we need to do more of what we're already good at.

Sometimes we need to pay attention to the club we keep leaving in the bag.

You don't have to be perfect at all of them.

But you probably can't ignore one forever and expect your favorite healthy habit to make up for it.

So here's our question for you:
What's the club you keep leaving in the bag? ⛳️

Swipe through ➡️ and then pick one thing you can work on this week.
Use the whole bag.

The Swiss ball can be a great way to train your core, but you definitely don’t have to start with the hardest version.

Here’s how I like to build this exercise:

1️⃣ Start higher.
Keep your hands toward the top of the ball and find a position you can control.

2️⃣ Tuck your hips underneath you.
One of the biggest things I look for is making sure your hips aren’t staying back in extension. Think about gently tucking your hips and keeping your body connected.

3️⃣ Gradually get lower.
As you get stronger and more comfortable, start working your way closer to the floor.

4️⃣ Move farther away from the ball.
Eventually, you can back your body away so your hands are positioned lower on the ball. That longer lever makes your core work a whole lot harder.

You don’t need to jump straight to the hardest variation.

Find the version you can control today, get really good at it, and then make it harder.

That’s what progression should look like. 💪

A LOOK BACK AT SEPTEMBER. 🖤

Another month filled with progress, personal bests, milestones, and plenty of reasons to celebrate.

Our members took on another DEKA Challenge. We celebrated being named a Best of Naperville winner. We watched more PRs get crushed, more Bike Challenge stickers earned, and more milestones reached.

And, of course, we kicked off fall by repping our favorite NFL teams. 🏈

September, well done!
October, we’re ready for you. 🖤💛

Something hurting when you exercise doesn’t always mean you need to stop exercising altogether.

And it also doesn’t mean you should just push through it.

A lot of the people we work with come to us with arthritis, old injuries, joint replacements, or movements that simply don’t feel great right now.

Our job isn’t to force their body to fit the workout.

It’s to find a version of the workout that fits their body.

Sometimes that means changing the range of motion.

Sometimes we use less weight.

Sometimes we add assistance or choose a different variation.

And sometimes something hurts in a way that tells us we need to stop and take a closer look.

There are a lot of options between “push through it” and “I guess I can’t do this anymore.”

Swipe through for 5 things to remember when exercise hurts. ➡️

And remember:
You don’t have to feel perfect before you start getting stronger.

Find what you can do today. Get stronger there. Build from it. 💪

We are excited to celebrate our September Golden KB winner, the awesome Fiona Hilton! 💛💪

Fiona and her husband moved to Naperville from Connecticut four years ago. After previously training in small group sessions, they were looking for something similar here and found Beyond Measure!

What keeps Fiona coming back?

“I love the small group sessions, the focus on improving strength and mobility, the wonderful instruction and encouragement, and the fun community. It’s a great way to start my day.”

But there’s an even bigger reason behind why Fiona continues to prioritize her strength.

After watching her parents become more frail and less mobile in their 80s, Fiona wants to do everything she can now to stay strong, active, and independent for as long as possible.

And she is DEFINITELY getting stronger! 🔥

Fiona recently hit a 185 LB DEADLIFT PR! 🎉

She says she’s constantly amazed by the weights she can lift compared to when she first started. Her next goal? Pushups from the floor!

A few more things about Fiona:

💪 Favorite exercise: Squats in all forms
😅 Least favorite: Overhead presses
✈️ Outside the gym: Lots of traveling!
🔎 Hidden passion: Researching her family history, especially her Scottish roots

For Fiona, strength training isn’t just about what she can do inside the gym.

It’s being able to squat down to empty the washing machine. Climb a stepladder and lift boxes from a shelf. Put luggage into an airplane overhead bin.
Navigate uneven stairs and terrain while traveling.

Those everyday things are exactly why strength matters.

As Fiona put it:

“I’ll just keep coming so that I can keep traveling and enjoying life!” ❤️

And THAT is what this is all about.

Fiona, congratulations on being our September Golden KB Winner! We love having you as part of the Beyond Measure family, and we can’t wait to see that first floor pushup! 💛💪
