Just a friendly reminder that our Belt Test is this Saturday! As a result, there will be no regular classes on Saturday.

✅ If you have not yet turned in your completed belt test form, please bring it with you when you arrive for testing.

👊 Uniform Reminder: All students must test in their full gi uniform with their belt. T-shirts are not permitted during belt testing.

We are excited to see everyone showcase the hard work they’ve put in over the past few months. Good luck to all of our testers - come prepared, focused, and ready to do your best!

At HiYa! Karate, our Competition Team represents dedication, discipline, and heart every time they step on the mat. None of that would be possible without the incredible support of our Black Belt Level Sponsors.

Your generosity helps our athletes train harder, travel to events, and gain the experience they need to grow as martial artists and leaders. From local tournaments to bigger stages, your support is a key part of their journey.

We are truly grateful for your partnership and belief in our students. Please join us in thanking our Black Belt Level Sponsors for investing in the future of these hardworking athletes.

Together, we’re building confidence, character, and champions - on and off the mat.

One of the most common questions we receive this time of year is: “What does it mean if my child didn’t receive a testing form?”

At HiYa! Karate, belt testing is about readiness, not rushing. Every student progresses at their own pace, and our goal is to help them build strong fundamentals, confidence, and long-term success. Sometimes that means waiting a little longer before the next test so they have the opportunity to fully learn and retain the material.

As students advance through the ranks, the time between tests often increases. Higher belts require a deeper understanding of techniques, forms, self-defense, and leadership skills - not just learning new material, but mastering previous requirements as well.

We encourage students and parents to speak with an instructor if they have questions about testing readiness. We are always happy to discuss progress and help create a plan for future success.

Remember: A delayed test is not a setback - it’s an investment in building a stronger martial artist.

One of the most exciting milestones in a martial artist’s journey is earning their next belt! We often get questions about how testing works, so we put together a few answers to help.

At HiYa! Karate, belt testing is about much more than just learning techniques. We look for consistent attendance, positive behavior, respect at home, school, and in class, and a solid understanding of the curriculum. Every belt earned represents growth in both skill and character.

For our younger Tiger Cub and Dragon students, testing is designed to build confidence, celebrate progress, and give them a chance to show off all the amazing things they’ve been working on!

If you have additional questions about belt testing, feel free to ask one of our instructors. We’re always happy to help.

Please join us in congratulating Connor on recently performing in Alice in Wonderland with the ARCH Players! We love seeing our students pursue their passions both inside and outside the dojo, and Connor is a great example of that.

Connor also happens to be our Student of the Month, and it’s easy to see why. In his playbill biography, he shared that he loves karate, whittling, drawing, playing outside in the woods, camping, playing video games, spending time with friends, and building with Legos.

Whether he’s on stage, in the dojo, or exploring one of his many hobbies, Connor brings enthusiasm, creativity, and a positive attitude to everything he does.

Congratulations, Connor! We are proud of all you have accomplished and can’t wait to see what you do next!

HiYa! Karate is proud to recognize three outstanding students from Linganore High School who were honored during last week’s awards ceremony for Academic Excellence, maintaining Honor Roll status throughout their entire high school careers.

Please join us in congratulating:

HiYa! Karate would like to take a moment to recognize former student Joey Garafolo.

Joey, whose mom Romy was also a HiYa! Karate student, recently graduated from St. John’s Catholic Prep. Last night, he was recognized by the Town of Mount Airy for an incredible achievement - being accepted into the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point.

Earning an appointment to West Point is a testament to years of hard work, dedication, leadership, and perseverance - qualities we know Joey has demonstrated both on and off the mat.

Please join us in congratulating Joey on this tremendous accomplishment and wishing him continued success as he begins this exciting new chapter of service, leadership, and excellence.

Congratulations, Joey! We are proud to have been a small part of your journey.

This month, our students focused on putting our Student Creeds into action every day!

Good manners aren’t just about saying “please” and “thank you.” They are about showing respect, demonstrating self-discipline, making good choices, and encouraging those around us. These are the same values we practice every day on the mat.

We are proud of all our students who worked hard this month to show kindness, respect, and leadership at home, at school, and in the dojo.

⬇️ Tell us in the comments: Which Student Creed do you think you demonstrated the most this month and why?
