The goal shouldn’t be to get to varsity as fast as possible. The goal should be to become a varsity player who actually impacts winning when they get there. There’s a big difference between making the roster and being ready for the level.

Some players are being rushed through development because everybody wants to say they’re “playing up.” Playing older competition sounds good until the player stops attacking, stops making decisions, and becomes afraid to make mistakes. Playing 25 minutes on JV can develop a young player more than sitting 28 minutes on a varsity bench. Reps, responsibility, and confidence matter. Higher level doesn’t automatically mean better development.

🏐 How to Become a Good Blocker in Volleyball

🔟 10 Essential Blocking Tips

1. 👀 Read the Setter First
Watch the setter’s body position and hands to anticipate the set.

2. 🏃 Move Quickly Along the Net
Use efficient lateral footwork to get into blocking position.

3. 🦵 Build Explosive Jump Power
Practice safe, progressive jumping exercises to improve your blocking reach.

4. 👐 Press Your Hands Over the Net
Reach up and forward with strong, controlled hands rather than simply jumping high.

5. 🎯 Watch the Attacker’s Shoulder
The hitter’s approach and shoulder position can give clues about the attack direction.

6. 📍 Close the Block Properly
When blocking with a teammate, eliminate the gap between your hands and arms.

7. ⏱️ Improve Your Timing
Jump at the right moment—too early or too late can leave the attacker an easy opening.

8. 🧱 Keep Your Hands Strong and Stable
Maintain firm wrists and spread your fingers to create a strong blocking surface.

9. 🔄 Transition Quickly After the Block
After landing, recover immediately and prepare for the next play.

10. 🧠 Study Attackers and Game Patterns
Learn to recognize common approaches, sets, and hitting tendencies.
