Protect our Floodplain and Natural Areas was the overwhelming theme at the city council meeting last night when discussing the Disc Golf Proposal.

An overwhelming majority of speakers at the public hearing voiced opposition to building a disc golf course in the proposed Maumee River floodplain location. While many residents said they support disc golf and would welcome it elsewhere, they made it clear that this unique natural area should remain untouched. (81% opposed, 19% in favor of disc golf.)

Key themes from public comments included:
🌿 Protecting wildlife habitat and pollinators
🐦 Preserving a popular birding destination
🌊 Maintaining the integrity of the floodplain ecosystem
🏞️ Keeping one of Maumee’s most cherished natural spaces in its current state

Residents shared comments such as:
🗣️ “Leave it alone people! It’s NATURE!”
🗣️ “Most expressed that they are not against disc golf, just this particular location.”
🗣️ “The native wild area needs to be preserved for the animals who need the resources and for the pollinators who are needed for our food crops.”

Supporters of the project, many of them disc golf enthusiasts, argued that the course could coexist with the environment and cause little to no impact on wildlife.

The debate now moves forward, but one message was heard loud and clear from many residents: “Find another location, but protect this one.” Continue to email your city council.

Sound off below and let’s hear from you on this topic.

Has anyone seen lesions on a walleye this bad? This is pretty crazy to have that many around his mouth.

We are deeply saddened and concerned with the shooting near Toledo’s Old West End Festival. This is way to close to our Maumee River community and families that spend time on the river.

What was supposed to be a day of music, food, and community celebration turned into chaos Saturday evening after multiple people were shot near the Old West End Festival in Toledo. Police say several victims were transported to area hospitals, and officers are actively searching for the suspect(s). Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

More information is expected as the investigation develops.

Good news on the Lake Erie Algae Bloom (So Far!)

The latest NOAA forecast predicts a moderate harmful algae bloom (HAB) for western Lake Erie in 2026, similar to the blooms seen in 2022 and 2024.

Despite a major phosphorus runoff event in early April, heavy rains in late May largely missed the Maumee River watershed, helping keep bloom projections from climbing higher.

What it means:
1) No major bloom expected at this time
2) Conditions currently point toward a moderate season
3) Heavy rain events between now and July could still increase bloom severity

We will watching and update you as NOAA will releases more information. Graph from NOAA
