Big concepts can be easier for young children to understand when observed in the world around them. Something as simple as a leaf creates opportunities to explore change and the natural cycle of life.
Enjoy a nature walk and collect leaves at different stages.
Give children time to handle, compare, arrange, and examine the leaves in their own way. Encourage them to observe and wonder.
- What do you notice about the leaves?
- What differences do you see? What stays the same?
- Why do you think leaves change?
- What do you think will happen next?
- What questions do you have about what you see?
Build an understanding of nature’s life cycles while inviting curiosity for the world around them.
“For most of us, knowledge of our world comes largely through sight, yet we look about with such unseeing eyes that we are partially blind. One way to open your eyes to unnoticed beauty is to ask yourself, ‘What if I had never seen this before? What if I knew I would never see it again?’” - Rachel Carson (1956)
