Specks are on the move!

Reports are starting to roll in from friends across the country who are seeing the first migrating White-fronted Geese of the year.

In typical fashion, the earliest travelers are Pacific Flyway specklebellies, with birds showing up along the coast and inland across Washington and Oregon. Sightings are already reaching as far south as Klamath and into California.

Moving east, the Central Flyway is beginning to see its first arrivals as well, with reports of family groups of white-fronts showing up south of Calgary, Alberta.

Farther east in Saskatchewan, specks are just beginning to push below the tree line of the boreal forest in areas like Loon Lake, with scattered reports of flocks as far south as Swift Current.

White-fronts always seem to lead the way and kick off the fall migration. The first reports are in, birds are moving, and we can’t wait to see what the coming weeks bring!

DSD Subspecies Spotlight:

The "Cackler"

The Minima is the smallest recognized subspecies of Cackling Goose and one of the more distinctive in the Branta genus. Known locally as simply "Cacklers", Minimas are tiny, dark-bodied geese with a short neck, small, round head, and a noticeably darker appearance than many of their larger white-cheeked relatives. They breed primarily in western Alaska, particularly around the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, before migrating south along the Pacific Flyway to wintering areas in the PNW and CA's Central Valley. Eastern Washington has been reporting a large influx of Cacklers in recent years.

For hunters, size is one of the biggest clues when separating Minimas from other Cackling and Canada Geese. These little geese can look surprisingly small in the air, especially when mixed with larger birds. Their compact bodies, short necks, and dark coloration give them a distinct profile that experienced hunters learn to recognize. Their voice is an easily recognizable high pitched "peep". When you're targeting Minimas, matching that smaller profile and darker coloration in the spread can make all the difference.
