Santiam Spokes Bicycle Club

Santiam Spokes Bicycle Club Bicycle Club Santiam Spokes is a recreational bicycling club for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Generally we're low-key. Pick up a copy.

We like to ride, but we are happy also to go slowly and enjoy the wonderful biking roads in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Oregon. Our group that prefers to go slower and shorter distances is called The Santiam Spinners. We look after each other on rides and try to be sure that everyone is having fun. We welcome new and experienced riders. Regularly we offer a Discovering Bicycling Class that

helps you get off the sofa and into the fun of bicycling. We have special rides that take us to wineries or cemeteries, on ferries or overnight camping, up steep hills, or week-long tours. We ride to festivals and celebrate the beauty of our countryside. Mostly our rides are moderate on the many routes we have mapped in the Willamette Valley. However, we do some climbing and fast rides that are strenuous and challenging. Six of our members have ridden across the United States. Almost every summer we have a week-long, camping w/sag club tour. This has to be the lowest cost bike tour in the state

Since 1992, each June we produce the Strawberry Century tour, a premier event to initiate summer. Riders say this is the best run tour in Oregon; the Strawberry is becoming more popular every year. We also help community by conducting bicycling clinics for children, donating helmets and other safety gear, and other activities to further responsible bicycling by youth and adults. Our club meetings are at 7:00 PM on the first Thursday of each month at Lebanon Community Hospital. Our newsletters are in area bike shops. We have several parties and gatherings each year. There's plenty of room and fun!

We are sad to announce the 2024 Strawberry Century is cancelled. The number of volunteers it requires to put on a quality event are not available.

355 STRONG!

That was the number of riders who rode the 31st Strawberry Century Saturday, June 24, 2023. The weather was perfect, the riders were anxious to take the road at registration – then they were off and riding. I am happy to report all riders were accounted for and completed their respective rides. We had an instance where tandem riders needed assistance and a set of other tandem riders came to their rescue with a wheel. There was a promise of beer in there somewhere………

A big SHOUT OUT to local community businesses listed below for their generous support and the volunteers who manned the rest stops providing food, drink and place to relax for the riders as they moved on. This event could not have been accomplished without their support:

Randy’s Café, Brownsville; Charlie Eads, KGAL/KSHO Radio, Albany; Dutch Bros, Market & Hwy 20, Lebanon; Kevin and DeeDee, Grocery Outlet, Lebanon; Linn County Federal Credit Union, Sweet Home; Ernie Ritchie, Big Dawgs Food Cart, Lebanon; Sweet Home School District; Sally Skaggs, Santiam Place Wedding & Event Hall, Lebanon; Yvette Meyer, Northwest Apparel & Graphics, Lebanon.

Volunteers: Al Rimer, Barb Watson, Melissa Thompson, Jay and Linda Thatcher, Julia Anderson, Emma Ybarra, Sandy Law, Michelle Petersen, Scott and Lauren Starha, Larry and Cyndi Rozcicha, Craig, Sharon and children Lalley, Phillip Hawkrigg, Sally Skaggs, Barbara Tarrant and the Beta Sigmi Phi ladies.

As the floater – someone going where they are needed – I had the pleasure of stopping and visiting with the riders along the route at the rest stops. The camaraderie was amazing – what a great group of individuals to gather together for a mutual interest and fun. An interesting fact is the age factor, the youngest rider was 9 and the oldest 84 and everywhere in between!

Riders came from all over Oregon: Albany, Amity, Aumsville, Aurora, Beaverton, Bend, Canby, Corvallis, Cottage Grove, Damascus, Durham, Eugene, Gearhart, Gladstone, Grants Pass, Happy Valley, Hood River, Jefferson, Keizer, King City, Lake Oswego, LaPine, Lebanon, Lincoln City, McMinnville, Milwaukie, Monmouth, Newberg, Newport, Oregon City, Philomath, Portland, Redmond, Salem, Seal Rock, Seaside, Sherwood, Silverton, Springfield, Stayton, Sweet Home, Tigard, Troutdale, Tualatin, West Linn, Wilsonville, AND ARIZONA, CALIFORNIA AND WASHINGTON. What a great turnout! And a BIG THANK YOU for all the cyclists that joined us.

Beginning in April 2023, bicycle safety education classes were held for fifth grade students attending two of Sweet Home elementary schools (Oak Heights and Holley). The program is a cooperative arrangement between the Greater Santiam Boys & Girls Club, the school district, and each individual school along with the Santiam Spokes Bicycling Club contributing $5,000 towards the classes. Assisting Jay Thatcher, the safety educator were Doug Robin, Donna Short, strong supporters of the program, Ken and Fran Bronson, members of the Santiam Spokes and Larry Horton, retired Sweet Home School District Superintendent and current rotary member.

The Bicycle Safety course is 10 sessions and covers curriculum from learning to ride a bike to bicycle and helmet fittings and, of course, bicycle safety. The "final exam" is a fun community bike ride through Sweet Home where the students hone their skills of proper signaling, street intersection protocol and road safety with Jay, Donna, Doug, Ken and Fran assisting. An added bonus was when Officer Trevor Sundquist of the Sweet Home Police Department joined in on the ride!

Classes are being planned for the remaining grade schools this fall.
