THE CHAMPION’S LEAD IS SAFE. THE HORNET FIELD ISN’T.

Shanklin controls the standings, but Matlock and Voepel are turning up the heat at Willamette Speedway

LEBANON, Ore. — Jesse Shanklin II owns the Hornet championship lead at Willamette Speedway.

Right now, that is the easy part to understand.

The harder question is this:

Who wants to race the kids?

Shanklin enters the weekend with 578 points and a commanding 192-point advantage over second-place Caleb Day. He has spent the season doing what championship contenders are supposed to do — running consistently, collecting points and making himself very difficult to catch.

But while Shanklin has built a fortress at the top of the standings, something far more interesting has started happening behind him.

Jacob Matlock and Weston Voepel are getting fast.
And they are getting fast at exactly the wrong time for everyone else.

Matlock’s surge has been impossible to ignore.

The Lebanon driver broke through during the Strawberry Cup make-up race, scoring his first Hornet victory on a Saturday night at Willamette Speedway.

The next day later, he came back and won everything.

One Saturday brought the breakthrough.

The next brought domination.

That is how reputations begin to change.

Matlock now sits fifth in points with 308, only three behind fourth-place Loran Hadley and just 46 behind third-place Loran Hadley Jr.
But the standings do not fully explain what is happening with the No. 14.

Momentum does.

Two Saturdays ago, Matlock was a young racer looking for his first win.

Now he is a driver the rest of the Hornet field has to account for.

There is a difference between believing you can win and knowing you can win.

Matlock knows now.

And that confidence can be dangerous.

He is not alone.

Voepel, another of the division’s young guns, has also begun showing signs that the No. 16V is coming alive.

He sits ninth in points with 190, but recent speed suggests the standings may not tell the entire story.

That should concern the veterans.

Hornet racing has never been particularly interested in respecting reputations.

Traffic is tight. The racing is physical. Openings disappear quickly. A driver who hesitates can lose three positions before the next corner.

And when a young racer suddenly discovers speed and confidence at the same time, things tend to get interesting.

The established contenders are still there.

Day remains second with 386 points. Loran Hadley Jr. holds third with 354. Loran Hadley sits fourth with 311. Matlock is fifth at 308, while Matthew Bangle is right behind him with 297.

That puts just 57 points between third and sixth.

Shanklin may have room to breathe.

Almost nobody else does.

That is where this weekend becomes compelling.

The championship leader still sets the standard.

The veterans still have experience.

But Matlock has checkered flags, Voepel has developing speed, and suddenly the Hornet division has a pair of young racers beginning to ask uncomfortable questions.

Matlock has already answered one of them.

Can he win?

Absolutely.

The next question is whether anyone can slow him down.

Two strong races can be dismissed as a hot streak.

Three begins looking like a problem.

And that is what makes Saturday and Sunday at Willamette Speedway worth watching.

Shanklin arrives with the points lead.

Day and the Hadleys arrive with championship position to protect.

Bangle remains within striking distance.

Matlock arrives with momentum.

Voepel arrives with something to prove.

Nobody gets to hide.

For most of the season, the Hornet story has been about Jesse Shanklin II building a championship advantage.

That story has not changed.

But another one is developing underneath it.

The young guns are coming.

Matlock has already kicked the door open.

Voepel is reaching for the handle.

And this weekend, the rest of the Hornet field gets two nights to decide whether they are going to shut that door —
or watch the next generation come charging through it.

The Hornets race Saturday and Sunday, September 5 and 6, at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Oregon.

The points leader may have a comfortable cushion.

The racing will not.
