By creating an 18-hole golf course on the closed Lantana Landfill, Palm Beach County and the Solid Waste Authority turned a useless piece of property into a popular community asset. Originally closed in 1987, the Solid Waste Authority and Palm Beach County began construction of this unique facility in 2004. ty, and while heaven and earth was not moved to build the course, over 645,000 cubic yards of fill was imported to create contours and cover the specialized irrigation system. The golf course which was opened to the public in March of 2007 has not only received engineering and environmental awards, it has also been certified by Audubon International as a cooperative sanctuary.
