This week at Parent + Child Art & Nature class, we started by foraging for sticks, learning how to build a fire, and gathering around the flames to slow down and notice the world around us.

We practiced observing the sights, sounds, and smells of the fire, talked about fire safety and took a moment to simply be present.

Then we brought that experience back to the art studio to explore charcoal, a medium born from fire itself. 🖤

No step-by-step project to copy. No pressure to make something a certain way. Just an invitation to experiment, make marks, play with light and shadow, smudge, shade, and discover what happens when we try something new.

We love finding ways to connect our experiences in nature with our creative work. And these little kids did such an amazing job. We are so proud. Not a clean hand in sight 🙃

We wrapped up week 4 of Spark Leadership with one a super fun challenge: the human knot!

What started as a tangled web of hands became an incredible exercise in communication, collaboration, patience and problem-solving. The kids did so well navigating the challenge, sharing ideas, adjusting their approaches and learning that every move they make affects the people around them.

Over these four weeks, we’ve watched them practice curiosity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking in real time. These aren’t skills kids develop by simply hearing about them. They grow through experience through trying, struggling, listening, adapting and figuring things out together.

We are so proud of how these kids showed up for one another and embraced each challenge week after week. When we were reviewing all of the big concepts, we were so impressed how much they understood and retained! Seeds are definitely being planted 🙃

A special thank you to Jess (.err) for bringing this program to life alongside us and creating such a thoughtful, engaging space for kids to explore what leadership really means. 💜 To all the parents who saw the value in this offering and participated in this first round, we are so grateful!

What an amazing four weeks!

We’re already planning to run it again….stay tuned for more kids’ leadership programs coming in 2027 🙏🏼

One of the things we love about being part of the It Takes A Village Homeschool Hybrid Community is the opportunity to bring something different to a child’s week.

As an enrichment provider, Spark creates space for kids to move, create, experiment, and explore beyond the traditional academic setting. Today, that meant yoga outside in the warmth and sunshine, followed by a creative and inspiring art lesson.

So many families love having yoga as part of their children’s week and we understand why. Kids deserve opportunities to build strength and flexibility, develop body awareness, practice breathing, and get their energy out.

Sebastian (Sebastian Alappat) leads our yoga practice with a focus on movement, breath, and play. It’s not about rigid rules or perfect alignment. It’s about helping children discover what their bodies can do, enjoy moving, and practice skills they can carry into everyday life. The best part is usually just stretching under the open sky enjoying the beauty and colors of the season.

We’re grateful to be part of a community that recognizes education can take many forms and that children benefit from experiences that nurture the whole child. ❤️🙏🏼

There are certain things we do at Forest School that the kids will never get tired of and making butter is definitely one of them.

We pour heavy cream into jars, put the lids on and start shaking. And shaking. And shaking some more. 🙃 The whole process takes about half an hour, which means everyone gets a turn. Little arms get tired, jars get passed around, and slowly, the cream transforms into butter.

We pour off the buttermilk for our bread, wash the butter, add a little salt, and carry our golden creation across the land to the fire pit.

And then comes the best part. Fresh bread coming off the fire, decadent gobs of homemade golden butter, and everyone gathered around eating together.

Warm bread, way too much butter, and a whole lot of happy kids. Doesn’t get much better than that. 🙃🧈🥖🔥

Our first masonry workshop was such a hit, we’re doing it again! This time, we’re going BIG… we’re building a pyramid!

How did ancient civilizations build structures that have stood for thousands of years? What can we learn from the people who built them?

Join us as we explore the history of pyramids, discover the science behind stone structures, and work together to build one of our own with Pennsylvania stone artist and educator Devin Devine of Devin Devine.

And of course, there’ll be time for free building, too! Castles, towers, wild ideas, and whatever else those creative minds dream up.

✨ Real materials
✨ Hands-on engineering
✨ Collaboration & problem-solving

We turned cream into butter, baked bread over the fire, revealed secret messages with lemon juice, and climbed trees to the very top.

Just another day at Spark Nature 😍

This week’s theme was Nature’s Alchemy, exploring transformation, patience, and what it means to tend to the things we want to grow.

We asked the kids: What do you want to tend to in yourself? And what they shared was profound. Better art skills, stronger building skills, a deeper connection with nature, being more caring toward a younger sibling. Their answers reminded us that growth looks different for everyone and more importantly, it takes time.

Then we brought alchemy to life. We made bread over the coals, shook cream into butter, and used heat to reveal invisible ink drawings representing what each child wanted to nurture within themselves.

In between? Crabapple gathering, tree climbing, Nugget Town building, sliding, and plenty of imaginative play.

Here’s the core of everything we do. Nature isn't just our backdrop. It's our classroom. And when children have the time, space, and freedom to explore, the learning is literally everywhere.

Truly the most magical, nourishing and delicious day!

At Spark, we love giving kids the chance to get their hands on real materials and discover what they can make with them.
This time, we’re turning clay into little autumn pumpkins!

Through pinching, shaping, pressing, and adding details, kids explore form and texture while creating something seasonal and fun 🎃

No molds, no cookie cutters, no two pumpkins exactly alike. Just hands-on creativity, a little experimentation, and the satisfaction of making something from scratch.

Watch the reel for the step-by-step and try it at home!
