The training sessions in our In-Season Mountain Athlete plan are designed to supplement your on-mountain performance. Long mountain days mean you get plenty of moderate-paced endurance work, uphill movement under load, rucking, and eccentric (downhill) leg strength training.

What you are not getting is total body strength, focused chassis integrity strength and strength endurance, short, intense work capacity, and aerobic base training. The training sessions in this plan address these fitness attributes.

In many military, fire, and law enforcement tragedy events, we can find deviation from basic principles as a common denominator in the after-action reports.

Similarly, as a young US Marine platoon commander and executive officer in 2018, my biggest leadership failures were a result of deviation from Leadership 101. The disasters occur when we decide that we are way beyond the basics and those foundational tenets are for the rookies.

We recently asked for feedback on our Urban Fire/Rescue Assessment update. Several firefighter crews completed the assessment and provided valuable feedback listed below.

Overall Results
- As we expected, this assessment was completed between 5-10 minutes, with individual outliers on either side.
- Feedback from crews was positive… a tough assessment that captured the physical requirements of the job.

Issues Identified
- Some departments only have one set of turnouts, which creates issues with responsiveness and carcinogen exposure.
- Many departments don’t have additional training packs or in-house SCBA bottle refilling units, which means a crew is down one bottle per participant on the engine or truck.
- One crew noted an issue with the Sandbag Clean and Press knocking the helmet lid. This is also a problem if a firefighter is ‘on air’ and getting tangled with the air hose/regulator.
- Another crew noted that sandbag loading should be the same regardless of gender. “The fire doesn’t care.”

MTI has a rotating cadre of 20+ paid, remote lab rats who form the core of our ongoing fitness research.

As a paid MTI Lat Rat, you’ll need to participate in multiple successive research studies. During this commitment, you will only be able to complete the study-prescribed programming. I.e. – you won’t be able to double up on the MTI study programming and your own programming.

In return, you’ll receive $150 per research study. We’re looking for a 4-study commitment. Most of our studies are 3.5 – 4 weeks long, but some stretch to 7 weeks, depending on the study.

My introduction to Rolfing came 15+ years ago from Mark Twight, during a Gym Jones seminar I attended shortly after launching Mountain Athlete.

Mark spoke enthusiastically about his ongoing Rolfing experience, describing it as “life-changing.” His endorsement stayed with me, and later, a close friend echoed the sentiment. At the time my close friend spoke glowingly of Rolfing, my body was stiff and achy, and I was unusually open-minded, so I decided to explore Rolfing by signing up for the initial course of ten Rolfing Sessions with the practitioner he used.
