Honoring a Trailblazer. Celebrating a Legacy.

Some people leave behind more than memories. They leave behind a movement.

Cynetra Freeman was a passionate advocate, a visionary leader, and a powerful voice for individuals navigating life after incarceration. As the founder of the Mississippi Center for Re-Entry, she dedicated her life to breaking down barriers, creating opportunities, and reminding others that everyone deserves a second chance.

Cynetra dreamed of bringing people together to address the challenges of reentry and build a stronger network of support across Mississippi. Although she is not physically here with us, we know she is here in spirit and her vision continues to inspire the work being done today.

At MAGCOR's From Barriers to Bridges Convening, we are proud to honor Cynetra Freeman with the Reentry Trailblazer Award, recognizing her extraordinary contributions and the path she paved for others.

During our November 12 reception, Cynetra's mother, Ms. Shelia Carter will join us to accept this award in her memory.

We are not simply remembering her legacy. We are carrying her vision forward.

Speaker Spotlight: Anita Craft

For Anita, helping someone return home is personal. She understands the uncertainty, the barriers, and the courage it takes to start again because she has walked that road herself.

During her incarceration, vocational training and an accounts payable role with MAGCOR helped Anita build skills, regain confidence, and discover a renewed sense of purpose. Today, she serves as a Peer Support Specialist at MAGCOR, using her lived experience with incarceration and recovery to support others returning to their communities.

Whether helping someone access housing, employment, transportation, treatment, or vital records, Anita brings firsthand understanding to the people she serves.

Join Anita at From Barriers to Bridges as she leads “The First 72 Hours After Release,” exploring the immediate challenges of returning home and the support that can help people take their next steps with confidence.

Meet Julia Lazareck and Dori Olmino, the speakers leading “Successful Reentry Starts at Home” at From Barriers to Bridges. Both bring personal experience with family incarceration and a commitment to helping families feel heard, supported, and prepared.

Julia is the co-founder of Prison Families Alliance and the author and podcast host behind Prison: The Hidden Sentence. Her work gives voice to families affected by incarceration and connects them with compassionate peer support. Dori, a first-generation NYU student and community advocate, co-founded PFA’s Support Group for Siblings and directs its Youth Connection Club, helping young people build resilience, communication skills, and connection.

Together, they’ll lead an interactive conversation about the challenges families face during incarceration and reentry—from financial strain and emotional stress to rebuilding trust. Because families play a powerful role in a successful return home, and they need support along the way, too.
