Synnott Mountain Guides (SMG) offers private and group instruction/guiding in rock climbing, hiking & backpacking, mountaineering, ice & mixed climbing, backcountry skiing, and avalanche awareness. We conduct our courses at a variety of different areas including Cathedral Ledge, Whitehorse Ledge, Cannon Cliff, Frankenstein Cliff, Mount Willard, and Mount Webster. We specialize in winter ascents of

Mount Washington, including routes in Tuckerman Ravine and Huntington Ravine. Owner and director Mark Synnott is an AMGA/IFMGA certified Mountain Guide, the highest level of guide certification available in the US. He is also a long time member of The North Face Athlete Team and local Mountain Rescue Service.

It’s the middle of summer and you’re probably enjoying some time near a lake, the ocean, or the mountains. But it’s not too early to think about winter trips, how about an AIARE 1 course in Hokkaido, Japan?

From January 17-19, 2027, join IFMGA guide Mark Synnott for an avalanche education course in the powder skiing capital of the world. To help you cope with the heat and humidity, check out these cool photos! SMG's Hanna (Operations Manager, Guide, AIARE Instructor) and Ryan (Guide, AIARE Instructor) spent late May into early June on Canada's highest peak, Mount Logan (19,551'). In their own words:

"Our trip was to Mt. Logan in Kluane National Park, Yukon Territories. We flew onto the glacier with three weeks worth of food and fuel and loaded all of our stuff onto sleds. We worked our way up to higher elevations, double carrying through the steeper sections. A window of high pressure arrived early in our trip, and we made the decision to try for the summit on our 11th day on the mountain. Mt. Logan has this really brutal summit plateau, you have to go up and down a bunch to reach the top. It ended up being a really big day and totally kicked our butts. But we reached the summit at 6pm on June 4th, and were back at the landing strip by the evening of the 5th. In total, we spent twelve days on the mountain."

It's getting a bit hot out there, but it wasn't too bad in the shade at Cathedral Ledge this afternoon. The bugs were manageable too! Get in touch if you'd like to climb with us this summer. We were on the Franconia Ridge Loop yesterday via the following trails: Falling Waters, Franconia Ridge, Greenleaf, and Old Bridle Path. Our timing was great as we had a clear trip across the ridge and only experienced some rain on the lower section of the Old Bridle Path. Get in touch if you'd like to hike with SMG this summer. While we're often on Mount Washington, we'd be happy to get out with you on any objective in the White Mountains.
