INSTRUCTOR SHOUTOUT
One of the things I’m most passionate about as an instructor is continual learning. Over the last several years I’ve trained with more than 60 different instructors outside of my agency requirements. I am regularly asked who I recommend and will be doing regular Instructor Shoutouts.
Today I’m spotlighting Chad Lyman (Chad Lyman) of Chad Lyman (C4C Police Jiu-Jitsu).
I’ve trained with Chad, I’ve also watched his training material online and studied/trained his material on the Dynamic Striking app. He’s a phenomenal instructor and a great man. A good father and husband. The kind of man other men should strive to be like on and off the mat.
Chad has been a cop since the late nineties, Portland first, then Las Vegas Metro. Patrol. Field training officer. Gang detective. SWAT. Defensive tactics and officer survival instructor. Court recognized use of force expert. He built C4C Police Jiu-Jitsu from real experience on the street.

He’s a third-degree BJJ black belt. He’s coached BJJ and MMA in Las Vegas since two thousand six, including as head BJJ coach at Xtreme Couture MMA He also co-hosts No Zoo Lions Podcast podcast.

What I respect is the mix. He’s an honorable man with real experience in police work and training some of the top level mma fighters in the world. Chad is as good as they come. If you get the chance to train with Chad Lyman, take it. Highly recommended.

Today I’m spotlighting Kenny Florian
Kenny is one of my all time favorite fighters. A few months ago I got to take a two day class with him. Day one was mma/bjj with focus on control. Day two was fi****ms. I learned a lot both days and considering I have taken so many fi****ms classes and teach fi****ms for a living full time says a lot about his level of mastery and instruction. Can’t wait to train with him again.

He’s a three time UFC title challenger and one of the original Ultimate Fighter Season 1 guys. He fought in four weight classes: middleweight, welterweight, lightweight. He’s a finisher with real cage IQ. I loved watching him fight and taking a class from him was very cool experience for me!
He’s a fifth-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He still teaches at Florian Martial Arts Center with his brother Keith. Aside from martial arts he’s a sponsored shooter with Walther Arms and competes regularly in USPSA. Be sure to follow his shooting/training page Kenny Florian He’s also the co-host of BattleBots and the 'The Anik & Florian Podcast' Anik and Florian podcast.
What stood out in class wasn’t the fame. It was the teaching. Clear control concepts on the mat everything had a reason and purpose. It was clear, usable and I find myself using it regularly in training rounds months later. No ego. Just a great guy who still trains, a mastermind that explains the why in a simple to understand way that makes everyone around him better.
If you get the chance to train with Kenny Florian, take it. Highly recommended.

This is a video I made a few years ago on one method I use to make a trainer cheaply. A cutting board is probably more than $10 now but it is still a viable option.

Quantifying the destructive power of a blade using “Pork Man” a medium of pork tenderloin, saran wrap, butcher’s twine, and denim. I’ve tested countless blades at this point and it is interesting to see what works and what doesn’t. There are alot of very popular/expensive blades that just don’t perform well. Test your gear.

I first saw this demonstration by Michael Janich of Martial Blade Concepts over a decade ago. I encourage you to take a class from him.

Today I’m spotlighting Professor Pedro Sauer. I got interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the early 2000’s after watching his challenge match against Lance Batchelor “Mr. Utah.” Pedro was about 150 pounds. Batchelor was a 250 pound bodybuilder who thought size and strength would decide the fight. It didn’t. That video put me on the path. I was lucky enough to have a Pedro Sauer affiliate gym in town, and that’s where I started. The first BJJ seminar I attended was at the gym I was training with guest instructor Professor Sauer. I’ve watched his online material and have also been able to attend a few of his classes at Jeff Curran’s BJJ Retreat in Florida, (you should go, it’s my favorite BJJ training experience and I hope to see you there!) where he teaches every year.
Pedro is brilliant, kind, and passionate. His values are exceptionally high. I’m grateful for every opportunity I have had to learn from him.

He is an 8th Degree Coral Belt from Rio de Janeiro. Rickson Gracie introduced him to jiu-jitsu as a teenager. In 1985 he received his black belt from both Rickson Gracie and Grandmaster Helio Gracie. In 1986 Helio awarded him the Técnico de Jiu-Jitsu certificate, a rare recognition of teaching mastery. He left a career as a stockbroker in Brazil, came to the United States in 1990 and helped pioneer BJJ in America.

He leads The Pedro Sauer Jiu Jitsu Association and has hundreds of academies across six continents. In 2005 he was named “Best of the Best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Instructor” in a worldwide ADCC poll. Rickson promoted him to 8th degree in 2010.

His jiu-jitsu teaches leverage over strength, control over chaos, self-defense first. He doesn’t just show how to do a move. He explains the why.
I also love the standard he sets for how one should carry themself.

If you get the chance to train with Professor Pedro Sauer, take it. Highly recommended.

INSTRUCTOR SHOUTOUT
One of the things I’m most passionate about as an instructor is continual learning. Over the last several years I’ve trained with more than 60 different instructors outside of my agency requirements. I get asked all the time who I recommend, so I’ll be doing regular Instructor Shoutouts.
Today I’m spotlighting Paul Sharp
I’ve taken a course from Paul and followed his work for several years. He’s a solid instructor and a great guy. The kind of man who makes you want to be better just by being around him.
Paul is a retired police officer with a little over 20 years on the job. He worked patrol, SWAT, undercover narcotics, and as a resident/neighborhood officer. He was also a lead pistol instructor for his agency.
He’s a Brazilian JiuJitsu black belt and one of the original Shivworks Collective instructors, that background shows. He understands entanglement, weapons at contact distance, and what a fight looks like when it isn’t clean. He’s also the author of Refuse to Die.
Paul doesn’t just teach techniques. He makes the people around him better.
One of my favorite quotes is, “There are two types of people in this world: those who bring joy wherever they go, and those who bring joy whenever they go.” Paul brings joy wherever he goes.
If you get the chance to train with Paul Sharp, take it. Highly recommended.
