Kayak Fishing Utah

Kayak Fishing Utah Welcome to Kayak Fishing Utah!! The states #1 Source for Kayak Fishing information and tournaments. There is no other experience quite like it.

As one of the fastest growing sports in the country, kayak fishing offers anglers a new way to access fishing spots. Kayakers can go into shallow water where the fish are and where most boats cannot follow. Kayak fishing is an exciting water sport that is relatively cheap, easy to get started, requires no fuel or motor and is a remarkably effective way to catch fish!

What can I say but holy wind!!! Morning started slow with a couple of crank bites shallow. All small fish so I changed it up and went deep. The fish were not really aggressive. Finally got my last upgrade at 2:30 to take me from 3rd to first. I was soaking wet and cold from the waves but all worth it! Never give up!!! Thanks to Brian Allred and Joe for all he does!!

2nd Place - Doug Roe

Wow… Sand Hollow Reservoir has always been a challenge for me. I’ve always been able to find fish, just never the quality ones. But during the Spring Fling, I finally started to figure them out—at least to a point.

During practice on Thursday, with limited time, I hit a few points around the island. I managed to pick up a small limit throwing a Ned (of course), but my main focus was dialing in some new electronics. Friday was a much better day for quality—I even landed my Sand Hollow PB. I really wish I’d had that fish on tournament day, but it was still a great experience. By the end of the day, I had identified three solid locations holding good fish, so the game plan was set.

The plan was to rotate between those three spots throughout the day, but the wind had other ideas and completely shut that down. Still, I was able to put together a solid limit within the first few hours—throwing, believe it or not, a chatterbait! I did lose a few good ones right at the net on that thing, though.

Once the wind picked up, the bite really died off. I didn’t get another quality bite until the final 20 minutes of the tournament. My last fish came on, shaking a Ned.

I’d like to thank KFU (Joe) for all the hard work he puts into organizing these tournaments, and BA Custom Baits for making the Ned heads I trust above all others.

3rd Place - Joe Randall

I didn't really find anything during practice. I was really hoping to flip reeds but the water was down. I just went fishing. Caught some deep and Caught some shallow. Like normal I found a better average of fish in my usual location, nothing big but just better averages. Headed back there on a tourney morning with no plan like normal other than just go fishing. Started with the old faithful drop shot and started catching some 15-16in fish. Got in the top 10 fairly fast but I didn't think it would last. My brother in law caught the Big Bass for the tourney and I thought if he could fill his limit with these fish here he had a chance at winning. I got into 3rd place about when the wind picked up and figured that would be the last good fish. I was able to catch 2 upgrades in the wind to move to first place. Headed to get off the water and get ready for the awards ceremony about 1:30 and figured someone would catch a last minute upgrade or was not submitting fish. Well Jason and Doug both caught a last chance upgrade to move them above me but I was still surprised to hold onto 3rd. Thank you to all the anglers for making this club fun to run!

What a fantastic way to kick off the year for Kayak Fishing Utah! It was great to head south and enjoy some warmer weather while getting back on the water. Anglers found success both during pre-fishing and on tournament day, making for an exciting start to the season. It was also great to welcome a few new faces, along with anglers from the SNKA club who joined us for the event. In total, 35 anglers submitted an impressive 219 fish, with plenty more caught that didn’t make the scorecard! We’re already looking forward to seeing everyone again at our first Bass Tour stop at Sand Hollow Reservoir on April 11th. See you there!

I found most of the better fish still holding deeper, so I decided to stick with that instead of moving shallow with the warming weather. The fish were positioned in 35 - 45ft around isolated cover like brush piles and holes in the grass and weren’t very aggressive. Fishing slowly around that deeper cover ended up producing the bites I needed to put together the winning limit. Thank you to Joe and KFU for putting on an awesome tournament and can’t wait for the next one.

2nd Place - Jack Beuing
Got to Sandhollow Friday, and I caught 3 fish in three different spots practicing. Saturday tournament day, I went to my first spot and caught two 17-incher on the minnow, but the bite slowed down. Moved to the second spot, too many people decided to move back to the first spot but was catching 14 and 15 inches. 2 hrs left, I decided to move to my last spot, throwing a crankbait. I caught an 18 and a couple of 16 and a lot of 15 nonstop. I want to thank KFU for putting up a great tournament, I had a lot of fun.

3rd Place - Jason Connelly
This tournament was a rough one. I had my earlier morning super shallow. All my first 14 fish came in the 3 foot range. As the day progressed I had to find them off deep water rocks and drop offs. Made a couple of last minute upgrades but not enough for the win. Thanks to Brian Allred for making my custom baits!!! It made a huge difference. Thanks to Joe and the KFU family!!!

Congrats to Angler of the Year Jason Connelly. Jason won the Bass tour AOY as well as the Monthly Challenge AOY. Hard work and dedication is the only way to stay consistent enough all year to be crowned the Angler of the Year. Jason is was a great ambassador to the club. Always calling to see If I need any help. Helping anglers on the water. Helping make sure the Jr's had a great time in the tourneys as well!

Jason Connelly:
What a exciting and hard season!!! Mine started out bad at the first sandhollow. I was mad! All I wanted was angler of the year. Been 2nd or 3rd every year since I started. So I made it a point to fish every weekend to find where I wanted to be tournament day. It paid off!!! The race was super tight between Travis Clinton and my self!! What a amazing guy and competitor! It all came down to state!!! Day one for me started super slow. I was freaking out until about 10. Then the fish showed up! Caught about 40 fish over 16 inches day 1 . Left me in second. Day 2 I have my fish first 1 hr. Cold front had moved in so I decided to go with a reaction bite. Crank was the bait! Almost every cast for a hr. After that no upgrades. Finished 3rd for state. That sealed AOY for me! So excited!!! Then found out I won the monthly AOY!!! What a great year. Shows what hard work will do !!! Thanks to Joe Randall and the kfu family!!! Ba custom bait was the difference on Day 1 so thanks Brian Allred for custom building was I always need!! Looking forward to next year!
