10 DAYS OF HONEY — DAY 1

September is National Honey Month, so we’re kicking off 10 Days of Honey with the basics…

That jar of honey represents an incredible amount of teamwork. 🐝🐝🐝
Honey production is a colony-wide process involving thousands of worker bees, each with a specialized role.

Foragers collect nectar and store it in their honey stomachs, or crops. During the return flight, enzymes begin breaking sucrose into simpler sugars.

At the hive, foragers pass the nectar to receiver bees through mouth-to-mouth exchange, known as trophallaxis. This process also spreads enzymes, chemical cues, and information throughout the colony.

More bees place the nectar in honeycomb cells, and fan it with their wings to evaporate water, then they seal the finished honey with wax for future use.

Foragers, receiver bees, house bees, wax producers, and guards all contribute through division of labor and constant coordination.

One jar of honey is the work of an entire superorganism.
