Farmer carries might look simple, but they are one of the most functional exercises you can do during pregnancy (and postpartum) 👀

Think about what pregnancy actually asks of your body. Carrying groceries. Carrying a toddler. Carrying a car seat. Moving through life while your center of mass shifts and your body adapts week after week.

Staggered farmer carries take this one step further. By loading one side more than the other, your body has to respond with subtle adjustments through the feet, hips, ribcage, core, and pelvic floor. Instead of isolating muscles, you’re training the entire pressure system to work together.🤝

This is exactly how the body functions in the real world.💪

For pregnant athletes, staggered carries can help improve pelvic and trunk stability, challenge balance in a safe and controlled way, and build the strength and resilience needed for everyday motherhood. They also encourage natural rotation and weight shifting, which are often missing from traditional prenatal exercise programs.

Pregnancy doesn’t happen on a mat. Life happens while carrying things, reaching, walking, and moving through space.

As pelvic PTs and perinatal fitness experts, these are the core exercises we recommend (and our clients love) because they train the core the way it was designed to work:

Not just flexion…

But stability, slings, breath, and deep support ✔️

These movements train the muscles that pregnancy and postpartum ask the most from:

Medicine Ball Crunches → controlled flexion & re**us abdominis with deep core engagement

Bird Dog Variations → anti-extension + rotational stability (progress from basic to full arm/leg reach or with knee hover)

Bear / Quadruped Planks → full core integration

Side Planks → obliques & lateral stability

Glute Bridge + Adduction → pelvic floor + inner thighs

Marching Bridge → pelvic stability & glute support
• Copenhagen Planks → adductors + inner core sling

Pallof Press → anti-rotation & oblique sling

Turkish Get-Ups → full-body core integration, shoulder stability & anti-rotation (start with bodyweight or light kettlebell/dumbbell)

Together they help rebuild and strengthen:
✨ the deep core
✨ the oblique sling systems
✨ the pelvic floor
✨ the glutes and adductors
✨ spinal stability & coordination

Using unilateral upper body movements like this one can actually do more for your pelvic floor than endless kegels.👀
