NOTE: If you have questions, feel free to ask. If you don't have updated info, aka, taken a legalities class within the past 2 years, you probably have outdated info.
If you have an axe to grind with the NY State permit process or NY in general, this isn't the forum for that. If you want to argue or be disrespectful, you won't get any traction here. Be polite. I've already deleted and block a few people.
Big news for responsible gun owners outside New York: You can now apply for a New York State Pistol License—even if you're not a resident!
Thanks to the recent settlement in Shaffer v. Quattrone, New York State has confirmed that residency (or in-state employment) is not required to apply for a pistol permit. Non-residents are eligible, and licensing officers can process applications accordingly.
This change creates real opportunities for out-of-state individuals who visit, travel through, or have connections to NY to pursue legal carry under the right conditions.
At Rochester Personal Defense, LLC, we're the leading provider of NYS CCW license courses—helping students meet all New York standards with expert, hands-on training.
