Pantographs can feel backward at first because your eyes are following a line while your hands are moving a machine you cannot see from the front. It’s like driving a car keep your eyes on the road ahead. Don’t watch the light.

I tell new pantograph quilters to begin with an open design that has a clear path. Trace it with your finger first, then follow it slowly with the laser until the movement begins to feel familiar.

The goal is not to land on every printed line with perfect accuracy. The goal is to build a smooth rhythm that looks good across the whole quilt.

Did pantographs feel natural to you right away, or did they take some practice?

When thread begins to fray or stitches start skipping, I check the needle before I start turning tension k***s.

A longarm needle has to make a clean path through the fabric and batting while giving the thread enough room to pass without rubbing. The right size depends on the thread and a worn or damaged needle can create trouble even when everything else is set correctly.

A fresh needle is a small change, but it can solve a surprising number of stitch problems. I also keep the old package nearby so I know exactly which size is in the machine.

Longmont, I will be heading your way on Wednesday, September 9!

This is hands-on time. You can move the machines, compare models, see different table choices and talk through your questions with me before deciding what belongs in your quilting room.

Being able to see where you are quilting makes a difference.

Tilly has a smaller top arm and a more open head design, giving you a clearer view of the quilting area. That visibility is especially helpful when working around appliqué, following rulers or placing detailed designs.

The needle laser also shows where the needle will land before you take the stitch.

These are practical features designed to help you see your work and quilt with greater accuracy. Contact me if you would like to learn more about Tilly.

Here are three little things that can make a noticeable difference at the frame!

Reducing drag when advancing a quilt without a power fabric advance, releasing tension in selvedge seams on a pieced backing and showing why canvas leaders sometimes stop looking straight.

These are not complicated fixes. They are the kinds of details I have picked up after many years of loading and quilting real quilts.

Which one would be most helpful in your quilting room?
