Cave Dogs

Cave Dogs Since 1979, the Cave Dogs have played a competitive brand of men's recreation softball. The team has enjoyed remarkable continuity of roster over the years.

The team has become more of a fraternity than a softball team.

The email I sent out today to the team.....

Dogs,

After much consideration during the off season, I have decided NOT to return to either play nor run the team for what would be the Cave Dogs 40th season. That said, we are working to ensure there will be a 40th season, so stay tuned.

After 27 years playing with the Cave Dogs, of which 17 have been administrating the team, I have decided that I am just no longer getting the enjoyment out of it for the time I put into it. I can no longer play the game at the level that is satisfying to me nor do I think I contribute to the team in a way that justifies the line-up spot I want. My ankles have slowed me to a feeble crawl and are not getting any better. Last year, I sold my business, which has me essentially restructuring many aspects of my life. Deciding to hang them up was just one of my many introspective conclusions.

I will continue to attend a few games each year and enjoy the camaraderie of the post-game bar. I am also available, from time to time if you are really short on players. Otherwise, it has been one of my life’s great blessings to have had this great home to exercise my softball addiction for so long. The Cave Dogs have been the source of some of my fondest memories and best friendships. One of the best aspects of this team has been that we always show up and show up with great attitudes. Please keep that going!

Again, I do expect us to continue to play. Look for another e-mail in the next couple of weeks from Gary, Richie, I or another Cave Dog delineating next steps. Please join me in wishing continued success for the team.

The 39th year (117th season?) of Cave Dog softball will begin on Monday March 20 at South Suburban's deKoevand Park.

We are playing spring ball at South Suburban as Foothills has no spring league this year. Foothills will be running a longer summer league, which begins in early May. (There may be a game or two overlap in leagues, meaning we would play a double header with a drive in between).

Note that we have not played in deKoevand in the past. It is located just north of the intersection of University Blvd and Arapahoe Road (near Southglenn). It is a little smaller park than Cornerstone, but it is a very nice facility.

We will once again play a 6 game spring (plus playoffs), a summer season, likely at Foothills (I think 12 games plus playoffs) and a 7-game fall (plus playoffs) for a minimum of 25 games. Olde Towne Tavern told us last fall that they would re-up their sponsorship of us, so the league fee should be about $25.

I hope to schedule a weekend practice on first weekend of March, but I will defer to everyone’s interest in that as it was not a popular event last year.

What I need to know at this point is whether each of you plans to return to play most of the Monday night games, at least for the spring. If you see your role as a sub/on-call player, please let me know that status.

If you plan on playing ball this spring, kindly contact eric via e-mail.

Dogs,

This page has been dormant for too long. We were all excited about being the #1 seed in the summer league that we forgot to show-up. The excitement soon deflated like an untied balloon.

For those that like horror instead of romance, we can discuss the Cave Dogs fall season. Let me start with a list the highlights:
1.
2.
3.

That about closes the book on 2016. Turn the page.

The Cave Dogs scouting their next opponent, Old Chicago Lakewood. The homework paid off as the Dogs slipped by previously undefeated Old Chicago to land the number #1 seed in the playoffs, which begins, for Dogs, at 8:05P at the Schaefer Sports Complex (Hampden and Kipling). The Dogs play the winner of Hawks v Abba-Zabba, a 6:15 game. Gates open for tailgating at..... well, the gates actually never close.

The Cave Dogs have concluded the regular season with an 8-1 record and 1st place in the 11 team Clement Park Monday Night League. Having knocked off previously undefeated Old Chicago - Lakewood (now 8-1) 16-15 during the 9:00PM game on Monday, now face the playoffs with the #1 seed. So the Dogs satisfaction of winning the regular season now gets challenged by a multi-round playoff which begins Aug 22.

The Dog Days of August: The Cave Dogs have concluded the regular season with an 8-1 record and 1st place in the 11 team Clement Park Monday Night League. They knocked off previously undefeated Old Chicago - Lakewood (now 8-1) 16-15 during the 9:00PM game on Monday. So the Dogs have the satisfaction of winning the regular season, but must defend that lofty status in a multi-round playoff which begins Aug 22. The Dogs hold the #1 seed.

The summer season is winding down just as the Cave Dogs kick it in to high gear. The Dogs (6-1) swept a twin bill on Monday night, handling Brant Electric (2-5) 19-11 in the first game, and then put up 13 runs in the 4th inning, but had to hold on to squeeze by the Greenfield Gangsters (3-3) 17-16.

There are two games left in the regular season; each against strong opponents. The Dawgs tackle Zaboyz (3-2 --- Monday's game results not yet posted) at 7:10 at Clement Park #1 on August 8 and then finish the regular season against undefeated Old Chicago-Lakewood (7-0) on 9PM on August 15.

The 4-0 Dogs (3-0 officially) handled the Sliders (now 2-2), rendering a 19-4 thumping on Monday night. The Dogs will take on a tough Base Invaders (4-1) at 6:15PM on Clement #1, followed by a match-up with the Alcoballics (0-4) at 7:10PM.

The Dogs also have a double-header on August 1 (the following week.) The next 4 games over 2 weeks should help us to see if the Dogs have legit championship potential in this year's Foothills Summer League.

07/13/2016

The Dogs knocked off previously winless Hawks 19-18 in extra innings on Monday. The Hawks licked their wounds knowing they scored more runs in the third inning than they had in their two previous games combined.

The Dogs (3-0) take on Sliders (2-2) at 6:15 on Monday July 18. Doubleheaders to follow on July 25 and Aug 1.
