Linda’s Speedway has made the difficult decision to cancel Friday night’s racing program due to the statewide Code Purple Air Quality Alert.
When we began evaluating Friday’s event, Pennsylvania was under a Code Red forecast. As conditions worsened, the state upgraded Friday to a statewide Code Purple alert, meaning the air is expected to be unhealthy for everyone.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection advises all residents to avoid long or intense outdoor activity during a Code Purple alert. Children, older adults and those with respiratory conditions are advised to avoid outdoor activity entirely. The conditions may look different at different points of the day, but the overall concern remains the same: the health and safety of our racers, crews, staff, and fans has to come first.
“We understand the importance of every championship race. We wanted to race,” said Mike Batz. “We have raced through difficult circumstances, but Friday’s air-quality emergency developed quickly and created a different situation. There is a difference between battling the temperature and asking people to participate in exactly what the Commonwealth is advising residents to avoid. Determination is important, but it also has to be balanced with judgment.”
Every facility has different circumstances, resources, schedules and responsibilities when making that judgment. Linda’s Speedway made the decision it believed was necessary based on the conditions surrounding its own event.
Our competitors have invested time, effort and money into their seasons, and losing a points race is disappointing for everyone involved. This decision was not made casually.
As frustrating as this decision is, we also want to keep it in perspective. The smoke affecting Pennsylvania has traveled, in some cases, approximately 800 miles or more from fires burning in Canada and northern Minnesota. If the effects are this noticeable here in central Pennsylvania, it is difficult to imagine what residents, firefighters and communities closer to those fires are experiencing.
Our thoughts are with everyone directly affected by the wildfires, and we thank our racers, teams and fans for understanding a decision none of us wanted to make.
