****Athlete Spotlight: Christine Buller (AKA Lil Bull)***

It’s a challenge keeping up with a twenty year old, said the athlete in the spotlight for May, Christine Buller. She took off on that run…
What did Christine do? She did what she has done for 15 years at CrossFit Hanford, she dug in, sucked it up and got after it.
“She was cheering me on and pushing me,” said Yamilet RomoUribe, the 20 something year old that was Christine’s partner. When the WOD ended, Christine flashed her recognizable smile, fist-bumped Yamilet and poured her remaining energy into building a relationship.
Christine (known to many as LB - Little Bull. Her husband Isaac being Bull) has been building relationships and personal fitness for 15 years at CrossFit Hanford.
LB was a runner who thought she was fit. She thought she was in good shape. Then, one Saturday morning she skeptically walked through the door. “I was 102 pounds. I thought I was super fit. I thought I could run circles around the other women who were here. I was wrong.” And so began her CrossFit journey.
The conversation at home went something like this: “I remember going home and Bull asking, ‘How was it?’” LB said Bull said, “‘I figured you wouldn’t be any good at it and not like it.’”
“Excuse me?” Christine answered back, recognizing a challenge when she heard one. Bull told her she had to give it a year.
So, what does CrossFit do to a marriage? “Strengthen it,” from LB’s perspective. She and Isaac have been involved with CrossFit Hanford ever since, though less so for Bull since he began working for the Porterville Fire Department.
At some point in that first year Christine found herself in a 26 minute chipper workout. About two and a half months into the year. “It was the first time I felt like I was good at it.” She recalled. “It feels familiar, I can do it.” She told herself.

Giving up is not likely. She says CrossFit has taught her to handle the challenges of life and work in ways non-crossfitters do not understand. “The stress level of WODs helps us to work through the daily challenges of life,” Christine says.

***Athlete Spotlight***
Ina David started CrossFit in Hanford in March 2025 and has consistently showed up at the 5 pm classes since then, making CrossFit a new habit in her life. Ina is our athlete in the spotlight for January 2026.

With her dark rim glasses and short haircut Ina could be mistaken for a bookworm, but she’s been digging into the Olympic lifts and gymnastics movements so she can do the workouts as they are posted.

Ina’s story begins in the Philippines where she grew up with her family. Her parents immigrated to the United States when Ina was 20. They settled in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

“Cape Cod is a busy tourist town in the summer,” Ina said, but it’s pretty small and cold in the winter. The United States Navy was Ina’s way out. She enlisted in 2015. Now her husband is in the navy and that is how they ended up in Hanford.

Ina has a son and she sees CrossFit as a way for her to be an active mom throughout his life. Ina practiced Taekwondo in her youth and was active athletically in college. But after her son was born she felt “lost” at the gym. “I do well when I’m around and competing with other people,” said Ina, so CrossFit filled her needs.
Ina is working on an advanced degree in marriage and family counseling. That workload, a young child and a husband in the navy could make regular gym attendance a challenge. My husband has a shore deployment now so he is home in time for me to get to class, and I appreciate that Ina says.

Ina enjoys learning the Olympic lifts and gymnastic moves. I’ve never done them before, but I want to do the workouts the way they are posted. Anyone who has coached her knows that Ina listens carefully and puts movement cues to work.
“I really appreciate all the coaches and everything they have to say to help me improve,” says Ina.

If you see Ina at a 5 pm class encourage her to sign up for the open. You can even encourage her to have her husband and son come down and watch her compete. After all, they are her reason that Ina David is at CrossFit Hanford in the first place.

***Athletes (Couple) Spotlight***
School. Work. Family. Kids. Friends. Obligations. Life can get fast and furious when the available 24 hours in a day are invested in the valuable things mentioned above. Working out or exercising can take a backseat. Unless there is another important element to working out.

That’s why Trent Pires says working out at CrossFit Hanford (most weekday evenings at 5 pm.) is, “The best part of our days is in the gym together. We look forward to meeting at the gym.” The other half of “we” is Dulany Pires, together they are the CrossFit Hanford Athletes in the spotlight for November..

Though they love anticipating and then seeing each other at the box, there are a lot more people to help make CrossFit Hanford the best part of Dulany’s and Trent’s day. Dulany’s brothers Griffin and Colby Jones are frequently at the 5 o’clock class. As is Colby’s girlfriend Darien Dunn, as well as Dulaney’s parents, Robin and Chris Jones. And for the past year, daughter Roxin has been at the box for most of the workouts.
Robin and Chris’s are the reason Trent and Dulany walked through the door of CrossFit Hanford in January 2024. Robin Jones was brought into CrossFit by coach Lisa Rocha when they worked together at Kit Carson Elementary School.

Trent was apprehensive to say the least, “CrossFit people were…” Fill in the blank with any of the stereotypes you may have heard. “We went to a regular gym,” and that was good enough. But parental persistence paid off and Trent and Dulany took a couple classes, went through some partner WODs, and before they knew it they were taking BT classes with Paloma Levin and, “We never looked back.”

Dulany says, “The people make the box. The workouts are hard, but having people cheering for you makes it fun. If it were not for the people I wouldn’t do it.” The support of others, says Dulany, “Makes dying every day, not that bad.” The camaraderie at CrossFit Hanford is at the top of the list of things Dulany likes most about her CrossFit experience.

Because with friends and family around, dying every day is, “Not that bad.” In fact, it’s the best part of some people’s day.
