****Athlete Spotlight: Christine Buller (AKA Lil Bull)***
It’s a challenge keeping up with a twenty year old, said the athlete in the spotlight for May, Christine Buller. She took off on that run…
What did Christine do? She did what she has done for 15 years at CrossFit Hanford, she dug in, sucked it up and got after it.
“She was cheering me on and pushing me,” said Yamilet RomoUribe, the 20 something year old that was Christine’s partner. When the WOD ended, Christine flashed her recognizable smile, fist-bumped Yamilet and poured her remaining energy into building a relationship.
Christine (known to many as LB - Little Bull. Her husband Isaac being Bull) has been building relationships and personal fitness for 15 years at CrossFit Hanford.
LB was a runner who thought she was fit. She thought she was in good shape. Then, one Saturday morning she skeptically walked through the door. “I was 102 pounds. I thought I was super fit. I thought I could run circles around the other women who were here. I was wrong.” And so began her CrossFit journey.
The conversation at home went something like this: “I remember going home and Bull asking, ‘How was it?’” LB said Bull said, “‘I figured you wouldn’t be any good at it and not like it.’”
“Excuse me?” Christine answered back, recognizing a challenge when she heard one. Bull told her she had to give it a year.
So, what does CrossFit do to a marriage? “Strengthen it,” from LB’s perspective. She and Isaac have been involved with CrossFit Hanford ever since, though less so for Bull since he began working for the Porterville Fire Department.
At some point in that first year Christine found herself in a 26 minute chipper workout. About two and a half months into the year. “It was the first time I felt like I was good at it.” She recalled. “It feels familiar, I can do it.” She told herself.
Giving up is not likely. She says CrossFit has taught her to handle the challenges of life and work in ways non-crossfitters do not understand. “The stress level of WODs helps us to work through the daily challenges of life,” Christine says.
